Florida Sea-level Rise Sketch Planning Tool for Transportation

October 2015

The University of Florida (UF) developed a geographic information system (GIS)-based “sketch planning tool” to help transportation planners in Florida identify transportation infrastructure potentially vulnerable to projected sea-level rise. The sketch planning tool offers a mapping function to visualize areas that will be affected by different sea-level rise scenarios based upon surface elevations and the location of infrastructure.   The tool is also customizable for experienced users to allow them to create more spatially refined inundation surfaces.

Louisiana Flood Risk and Resilience Viewer

Louisiana's Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA) has launched a “Flood Risk and Resilience Viewer,” an online resource which displays information on coastal land change, flood risk, and impacts to communities. This innovative tool provides coastal residents with access to the state’s best information about how Louisiana’s coast may change in the future, as well as resources to make communities and properties safer.

NRDC Ocean Acidification Hotspots Map

September 2015

The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) has developed an online interactive map of ocean acidification implications on coastal communities. The mapping approach determines where the ocean chemistry is changing most rapidly, where vulnerable species are located, and where people who most depend on these species reside. The intersection of these factors reveals an elevated risk from ocean acidification.

Heat and Social Inequity in the United States

August 2015

This interactive website provides a series of maps depicting the vulnerability of each county in the U.S. to heat as a result of climate change. Drawing on global climate models and socioeconomic metrics, these maps allow for county-level analysis of heat risk and can be used to bolster community engagement and preparedness planning.

Arizona DOT Resilience Pilot Program

August 2015

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is pursuing a “Resilience Pilot Program” (RPP) to improve data and modeling with the aim of reducing incidents of flood, hydraulic-related failure, and extreme weather damage to critical transportation infrastructure. A key element to the new RPP is a partnership with the U. S. Geological Survey (USGS). Leveraging USGS’s resources, the RPP is currently testing new technology such as fixed-wing drone, quad-copter hovercraft and ground based LiDAR imaging to better assess the siting, design, and construction of ADOT’s assets where they interchange with rivers, stream, creeks and floodplains.

Coastal Storm Modeling System (CoSMoS)

The Coastal Storm Modeling System (CoSMoS) is a numerical modeling system used to predict coastal flooding due to climate change-driven sea-level rise and storms. CoSMos provides explicit, deterministic modeling of all the relevant physics (e. g. , tides, waves, surge) of a coastal storm scaled down to local flood resolution projections. The system provides coastal planners and emergency managers with hazard information to inform coastal management, mitigate physical damage, and enhance public safety.

MARCO: Mid-Atlantic Ocean Data Portal

The Mid-Atlantic Ocean Data Portal is an online toolkit and resource center developed by the Mid-Atlantic Regional Council on the Ocean (MARCO). The Data Portal serves as a platform to engage all stakeholders in the five coastal Mid-Atlantic states, putting all of the essential data and state-of-the-art mapping and visualization technology into the hands of the agencies, industry, community leaders, and stakeholders engaged in ocean planning.

The Resilience and Adaptation in New England (RAINE) Database

The Resilience and Adaptation in New England (RAINE) database catalogs vulnerability, resilience, and adaptation plans, along with other reports, and web pages. RAINE provides information about these actions at the state, regional, watershed, and local level in New England. It not only includes links to web pages, reports, and plans, but also examples of presentations that communities use to engage their citizens, what tools they used to identify their vulnerabilities, and who funded their projects.

Climate Hubs Tool Shed

July 2015

The Climate Hubs Tool Shed provides information on tools to support agricultural and forest land managers in adapting to climate change. The database includes tools that are directly relevant to climate variability and change, as well as tools that can assist in managing climate related impacts, such as drought, pests, and extreme weather. The Tool Shed is managed by the U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) - who describes the target audience as Climate Hub extension and consultants, as well as land managers, land owners, and researchers.
