NOAA Coastal Flood Exposure Mapper

The Coastal Flood Exposure Mapper is an online mapping tool to view flooding hazards potential for the East Coast, West Coast, Gulf of Mexico, and Hawaiian coastal communities in the U.S. The mapper was developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to promote adaptation planning around coastal flood hazard risks and associated vulnerabilities.

Variable Infiltration Capacity Model (VIC) is a macro scale, semi-distributed hydrologic model that solves full water and energy balances, originally developed by Xu Liang at the University of Washington. New York State Climate Smart Communities: Climate Smart Resiliency Planning Evaluation Tool

October 2014

Climate Smart Resiliency Planning is a non-regulatory self-assessment tool developed for local government decision makers in New York State to identify opportunities in municipal planning for climate change resilience. The tool is formatted as a “yes/no” questionnaire for local planners and managers to assess a community’s current plans, climate hazard risks, disaster preparedness, and public engagement. Results can be used to inform the development of integrated planning documents that incorporate adaptation strategies to address a community’s vulnerability to climate impacts such as flooding, storm surge, sea level rise, extreme heat, and drought.

Danish Road Directorate - Blue Spot Analysis

September 2014

The Danish Road Directorate (DRD) developed a Blue Spot Analysis to identify roadways vulnerable to flooding under present conditions and future climate projections and to inform its climate change adaptation response. A “Blue Spot” is a section of road where there is both a high risk of flooding and significant consequences from flooding. Road flooding is the primary climate adaptation challenge for Denmark and is the focus of the DRD’s climate adaptation planning.   The DRD’s strategy to adapt to road flooding is to manage flooding that occurs, improve roads when financially feasible, and to prevent climate-related impacts whenever possible.

The National Map: 3D Elevation Program (3DEP)

July 18, 2014

The Department of the Interior's U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and other Federal agencies have launched a 3D Elevation Program (3DEP) partnership to develop advanced 3-dimensional mapping data of the United States. These data and related tools will be used in the areas of flood risk management, water resource planning, mitigation of coastal erosion and storm surge impacts, and identification of landslide hazards - as "an essential component of supporting action on climate resilience."

North Carolina Flood Risk Information System

May 19, 2014

In North Carolina, the state developed a Flood Risk Information System to improve the accuracy and functionality of the state's floodplain maps, and to help local governments and state agencies make decisions about how to reduce flood losses (or mitigate flood risks). The state digitized the floodplain maps developed by Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) using high-resolution LiDAR data for the entire state, and developed this System to make the maps more accurate and easier to use. This System incorporates additional data layers not included on FEMA floodplain maps - such as flood depth damage information determined from building footprints, parcel information, and first floor elevations.

EPA National Stormwater Calculator

2014

The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) National Stormwater Calculator (SWC) is a desktop application that estimates the annual amount of rainwater and frequency of runoff from a specific site anywhere in the United States (including Puerto Rico). The SWC is a simple to use tool for computing small site hydrology by estimating the amount of stormwater runoff generated from a site under different development and control scenarios over a long term period of historical rainfall. The analysis takes into account local soil conditions, slope, land cover and meteorology.
