EPA Webcast Series on Climate Change Adaptation for State and Local Governments

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Local Climate and Energy Webcast Series assists local governments as they explore topics related to local government climate change and clean energy efforts. These monthly webcasts highlight EPA resources available to local governments and present examples of successful climate and energy programs and policies implemented locally. Presentations, recordings, and other supplemental materials are available sorted by topic or sorted by date.

White House Climate Education and Literacy Initiative

December 3, 2014

The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy launched a Climate Education and Literacy Initiative in December 2014 to help connect American students and citizens with the best-available, science-based information about climate change. The Initiative is designed to increase student learning opportunities; equip educators with science-based information and resources; enhance climate-related professional development and training; and engage citizens through place-based and informal climate education.

The White House Blog: State-by-State Reports on Climate Impacts

June 26, 2013

The White House website provides detailed updates on President Obama's climate change action plan, while the White House Blog offers more of an insider's view to the President's whereabouts, with additional informative resources.   Along with an informal review of the new climate action plan, links are provided for state-by-state reports, where each state is represented by a briefing on current and anticipated climate impacts. Each state report details the impacts of extreme weather and pollution, the anticipated climate impacts of the related region, and examples of reducing carbon pollution and increasing climate resilience within each state.

EPA Local Government Climate Adaptation Training

This online training was developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to introduce local government decision-makers to the implications of climate change, the concept of climate adaptation, as well as provide examples of successful local government adaptive actions. Completing the online training video will take about 30 minutes.

Proceedings of the First National Expert and Stakeholder Workshop on Water Infrastructure Sustainability and Adaptation to Climate Change

January 2009

The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) held its First National Expert and Stakeholder Workshop on Water Infrastructure Sustainability and Adaptation to Climate Change on January 6-7, 2009, in Arlington, Virginia. Sponsored by the EPA Office of Water and Office of Research and Development, the workshop was attended by more than 130 invited experts and stakeholders from the federal, research, utility, engineering, academic, and NGO sectors. The workshop included several plenary sessions and focused on two major topics: 1) Climate Change Impacts on Hydrology and Water Resource Management, and 2) Adaptive Management and Engineering: Information and Tools.

Heat Related Illness Prevention (Training)

The goal of this web-based training course is to reinforce awareness of heat-related illness in order to promote the development and implementation of school guidelines, including an emergency plan by coaches, athletic trainers, students, school nurses, parents and teachers.   After completing the course, users should be able to: define heat-related illness; identify the three main types of heat-related illness; identify the symptoms, or warning signs, for each type of heat-related illness; describe treatment options for each type of heat-related illness, including return-to-play considerations; and describe steps to prevent heat-related illness.

2009

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) climate and public health framework was established in 2006, and in 2009, CDC formally established its Climate and Health Program. The mission of the Program is to lead efforts to identify vulnerable populations to climate change; to prevent and adapt to current and anticipated health impacts; and to assure that systems are in place to detect and respond to current and emerging health threats.

This study was conducted by George Mason University’s Center for Climate Change Communication in partnership with the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to explore Marylanders’ views on public health, energy and the environment.
