Initial Estimates of the Ecological and Economic Consequences of Sea Level Rise on the Florida Keys

February 3, 2011

The study, by the Nature Conservancy, is intended to catalyze interest in examining sea level rise impacts and developing adaptation strategies for the Florida Keys and similar islands in Florida and around the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Basin.   In 2007, the Conservancy acquired high-resolution Digital Elevation Models derived from airborne Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) data for Big Pine Key. Future shoreline locations and distribution of major habitats of Big Pine Key in the year 2100 were estimated using sea level rise scenarios described in the scientific literature.

City of Santa Cruz Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment

January 11, 2011

The City of Santa Cruz produced this vulnerability assessment in 2011 as a first step in developing a climate adaptation plan. The report aims to identify the climate impacts to which the City is vulnerable, analyze the risks which these impacts pose, and recommend potential adaptation strategies to reduce the City's risk and exposure. The assessment will serve as the basis for potential goals, objectives, and actions that will help the City build adaptive capacity. The assessment is intended to be dynamic and incorporate improved understandings of climate science, local vulnerability, and new adaptation strategies.

Warming World: Impacts by Degree

2011

This booklet summarizes the findings of a report from the National Research Council, Climate Stabilization Targets: Emissions, Concentrations, and Impacts over Decades to Millennia (2011). The report summarizes the impacts of greenhouse gas stabilization targets on near-term and future climate change - evaluating the implications of different  targets, with particular emphasis on avoiding serious or irreversible impacts on the Earth’s climate. Each stabilization target discussed results in a different future climate, with changes that may be difficult or impossible to reverse for millennia.

Climate Change and Cities: First Assessment Report of the Urban Climate Change Research Network (UCCRN)

2011

'Climate Change and Cities: First Assessment Report of the Urban Climate Change Research Network' (ARC3), was the UCCRN’s first major publication, published in 2011. The ARC3 report represents a four year effort by nearly 100 authors from dozens of cities worldwide, and is the first-ever global, interdisciplinary, cross-regional, science-based assessment to address climate risks, adaptation, mitigation, and policy mechanisms relevant to cities.

Integrating Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment into Adaptation Planning: A Case Study Using the NatureServe Climate Change Vulnerability Index to Inform Conservation Planning for Species in Florida

2011

Developed by Defenders of Wildlife in partnership with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, this report presents a case study using NatureServe’s Climate Change Vulnerability Index to inform planning for species conservation in Florida.   The work was a pilot for an adaptation framework that integrates information from species vulnerability assessments into a comprehensive planning process, to identify adaptation strategies and management opportunities for species vulnerable to climate change impacts.

Sea Level Rise and Potential Impacts by the Year 2100: A Vulnerability Assessment for Saco Bay Communities of Biddeford, Saco, Old Orchard Beach and Scarborough - Maine

December 31, 2010

Saco Bay is home to Maine’s longest stretch of contiguous sandy beaches, its largest expanse of coastal wetlands, and includes the coastal communities of Scarborough, Old Orchard Beach, Saco, and Biddeford. From the Saco Bay Sea Level Adaptation Working Group (SLAWG), this report provides the results and analysis of projected sea level rise inundation scenarios and land and real estate economic impacts for the Bay. This project was developed with the assistance of the Maine Department of Conservation, Maine Geological Survey (MGS) and the Southern Maine Regional Planning Commission.

Climate Change and Sea-Level Rise in Florida: An Update of the Effects of Climate Change on Florida's Ocean and Coastal Resources

December 2010

In 2009, the Florida Oceans and Coastal Council (FOCC) published a report entitled 'The Effects of Climate Change on Florida’s Ocean and Coastal Resources. '  That report focused on what was known, and was possible concerning climate-change effects on the state’s ocean and coastal resources. This report updates and expands a section addressing sea level rise in the 2009 report. This update involved contributions by 5 Council members, 12 contributing authors, and 11 external reviewers whose technical contributions were based principally on literature published by August 2010.

Effectively Addressing Climate Change Through Adaptation for the Energy Gulf Coast

October 2010

This presentation provides a synthesis of the analysis conducted on the economic impacts of climate change on the Gulf Coast. The research provides current and projected costs of storm surges, sea level rise, and wind related damage over the next 20 years. The risks, across numerous asset types, such as on-shore and off-shore oil and gas structures, and geographic areas are evaluated. Potential costs and benefits of numerous possible adaptation measures are presented. .

Climate Ready Estuaries: A Blueprint for Change

September 2010

This report summarizes key findings and recommendations for climate change adaptation in the region surrounding North Carolina's Albemarle-Pamlico National Estuary Program (APNEP), which is part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Climate Ready Estuaries Program. Recommendations to improve the area’s resilience and adaptation capacity, including specific recommendations to the APNEP policy board are included.
