Mainstreaming Sea Level Rise Preparedness in Local Planning and Policy on Maryland's Eastern Shore

January 2019

The Eastern Shore Land Conservancy partnered with the Georgetown Climate Center (GCC), the Eastern Shore Regional GIS Cooperative, and the University of Maryland Environmental Finance Center for this analysis on sea level rise preparedness in Maryland’s Eastern Shore region. GCC offers a discussion of strategies related to floodplain, zoning and regulatory standards to support sea level rise and coastal flooding resilience policies and decision making.

Columbus, Ohio Climate Adaptation Plan

The City of Columbus, Ohio Climate Adaptation Plan offers recommended actions that can be taken to help Columbus and central Ohio prepare for and adapt to climate change. Developed by a task force of researchers from the Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center at the Ohio State University, the plan is designed to support Columbus city government, regional organizations, and residents in building a climate resilient community.

Tribal Climate Adaptation Guidebook

November 2018

Created by the Oregon Climate Change Research Institute with support from Adaptation International, this guidebook provides a climate change adaptation planning framework for tribal communities. The report offers a stepwise framework on adaptation planning in tribal communities, and over 30 case studies of tribes already in the adaptation process. It identifies opportunities for working with both Traditional Knowledges (TKs) and western science, and is designed to be useful for tribes at any stage of adaptation planning.

A Guide to Community-Centered Engagement in the District of Columbia

October 2018

The Guide to Community-Centered Engagement was developed by the Georgetown Climate Center (GCC) in partnership with the District of Columbia's Department of Energy and Environment (DOEE). The guide synthesizes lessons from a year-long engagement process that GCC helped to lead in partnership with DOEE. GCC convened an Equity Advisory Group (EAG) of community leaders and residents in far Northeast neighborhoods of DC's Ward 7 to inform the implementation of the Clean Energy DC and Climate Ready DC plans.

Resilient Boston Harbor

October 17, 2018

The plan to develop a climate resilient Boston Harbor in the City of Boston, Massachusetts offers strategies for Boston's 47-mile shoreline that will increase access and open space along the waterfront while better protecting the city during a major flooding event. The plan focuses on green infrastructure and natural solutions to lowering the severity of sea level rise and flooding from climate change. “Resilient Boston Harbor” invests in Boston's waterfront with a proposed restructuring of Fort Point Channel, and development of coastal protection from East Boston to the Dorchester shoreline.

Cleveland Climate Action Plan - 2018 Update

September 21, 2018

Cleveland, Ohio has updated its Climate Action Plan with priorities that address social and racial equity, “good jobs, green jobs,” climate change resilience, and business leadership. The actions outlined are designed to achieve sustainability in Cleveland by integrating solutions that are environmentally sound, economically feasible, and socially equitable. While escalating Cleveland’s original 2013 CAP to continue building “Thriving and Healthy Neighborhoods" - the update maintains the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions 80 percent by 2050, with interim goals of 16 percent by 2020 and 40 percent by 2030.

Iowa City Climate Action and Adaptation Plan

September 18, 2018

Iowa City’s Climate Action Plan identifies strategies for city-wide greenhouse gas reductions, and climate change adaptation. The plan summarizes what Iowa City government has done in recent years to build climate resilience and to convert to renewable energy, and outlines 35 actions to be taken by the community and City to achieve the goal of reducing GHG emissions by 80% by 2050. The report provides general information about past and projected climate change effects on the region, and presents strategies to adapt to these impacts while incorporating social equity.

Massachusetts Statewide Hazard Mitigation and Climate Adaptation Plan

Massachusetts has integrated climate change impact assessments and planning into its Statewide Hazard Mitigation Plan. The natural hazards assessment conducted for this plan determines how hazard risks and vulnerabilities are made more severe or uncertain by climate change. The plan outlines climate change impacts and adaptation strategies for five key sectors including - Populations, Government, Built Environment, Natural Resources and Environment, and Economy.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin Framework for Green Infrastructure Plan, Ordinance

September 12, 2018

The City of Milwaukee, Wisconsin has approved the Framework for a Green Infrastructure Plan with goals of supporting climate change adaptation and resilience. According to the Framework and Ordinance which updates Milwaukee's stormwater management regulations, large developments will be required to capture the first 1/2 inch of rainfall using green infrastructure. The plan also increases funding for green infrastructure projects in Milwaukee’s streets, schoolyards, and parking lots. The City expects to publish the final Green Infrastructure Plan based on this Framework by February 2019.
