Funding Navigation for California Communities is an online portal for funding opportunities directed at local governments of California. Grants and other funding resources are categorized under seven project types, and those addressing climate adaptation and resiliency are primarily found under the categories of Drinking Water, Parks, Stormwater, and Wastewater Management. Greening the Gateway Cities Program
2018
The Massachusetts Greening the Gateway Cities Program (GGCP) aims to increase tree canopy cover in the state’s Gateway Cities, which are urban centers facing economic and social challenges due to recent losses in industry and manufacturing power. The program is currently operating in 18 residential areas with the goal of covering 5% of each area in new tree canopy cover. This initiative aims to reduce heat stress as well as energy use and cost for Massachusetts residents.

New York State Climate Smart Communities Grant Program
2018
The New York State Climate Smart Communities Grant Program, administered by the New York Department of Environmental Conservation, was established in 2016 and provides a matching grant to towns, villages, counties, and boroughs of New York City to implement projects related to climate change adaptation or mitigation or, more specifically, to work towards Climate Smart Communities Certification by undertaking eligible planning actions. Although all municipalities in the state are eligible to apply for these grants, Climate Smart Communities receive extra points in the application process (dependent on their certification level) in order to financially incentivize participation in the program.

EPA Environmental Justice Collaborative Problem-Solving Cooperative Agreement Grant Program

The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Environmental Justice Collaborative Problem-Solving Cooperative Agreement Program provides funding to support community-based organizations to develop and implement solutions that address environmental and/or public health issues for underserved communities. Cooperative agreements will be awarded to collaborative projects that partner with local stakeholder groups such as local businesses and industry, local government, medical providers, and academia.

The economic impacts of climate change will include property damage, lowered productivity, health impacts, and increasing energy use.

Miami Forever Bond - City of Miami, Florida
November 7, 2017
In 2017, the City of Miami, Florida passed the $400 million “Miami Forever Bond” authorizing the City government to borrow money through a general obligation bond to address sea-level rise and Miami’s affordable housing crisis. A 3 percent property tax will be used to repay the debt. Miami is one of the most vulnerable cities in the U. S. to sea level rise - facing increasing and compounding climate change impacts from flooding, storm surge, and saltwater intrusion into the Miami’s drinking water.

California Wildlife Conservation Board - Climate Adaptation and Resiliency Program

California’s Wildlife Conservation Board, within the Department of Fish and Wildlife, is a separate and independent Board with authority and funding to carry out an acquisition and development program for wildlife conservation. The Climate Adaptation and Resiliency Program was created by CA Assembly Bill 109 in 2017 to provide $20,000,000 to the Wildlife Conservation Board for local assistance, payable from the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund (GGRF), a statewide cap-and-trade program. The program funds are to be used for climate adaption and resiliency projects that will result in conservation and restoration of natural and working lands, and wildlife populations.

Keep America Beautiful - Community Restoration and Resiliency Fund

In quick response to the devastating effects of Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma arriving back to back in August and September 2017, the nonprofit organization Keep America Beautiful launched the Community Restoration and Resiliency Fund. The fund will provide financial aid, technical support, in-kind donations, and other resources to affiliates and community partners whose residents are facing the widespread and long-term impacts of these climate fueled extreme weather catastrophes. The funds will go to green infrastructure projects to improve resiliency, and to building community engagement through social programs.
