USDA NRCS Conservation Easement and Restoration Funding Programs

The U.S Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) offers financial incentives and technical support through multiple programs to public and private landowners aiming to conserve wetlands, agricultural lands, grasslands, and forests through long-term easements. NRCS provides funding opportunities to acquire land for conservation in both a post-disaster and pre-disaster context. All NRCS programs are voluntary and allow working lands owners to be compensated for conserving their lands. These programs and easements can increase local resilience to climate change by improving water quality, reducing soil erosion, and enhancing wildlife habitat. Most USDA conservation funding is allocated through the Commodity Credit Corporation and authorized in Farm Bills (about $5.3 billion in Fiscal Year 2018), while other conservation programs - offering mostly technical assistance - are funded by discretionary spending and annual appropriations (about $1 billion annually).

Agricultural Climate Resiliency and Efficiencies (ACRE) Program for Massachusetts

March 2018

The Agricultural Climate Resiliency & Efficiencies (ACRE) was created as part of the implementation of Governor Baker’s Executive Order 569, which focuses reducing carbon emissions and building a more climate resilient Massachusetts. The program advances that goal - as well as more specific goals identified in the Massachusetts Local Action Food Plan - by providing grants to producers to implement practices that improve their farms’ resiliency. $500,000 in grants have gone to 16 Massachusetts farms to install practices that help mitigate and adapt to climate impacts.

Meat of the Matter: A Municipal Guide to Climate-Friendly Food Purchasing

December 7, 2017

The research behind this report suggests that shifting institutional food procurement away from meat and dairy products and towards plant-based options would significantly reduce GHG emissions, and is more sustainable. Eating more plant-based foods is considered essential to meeting climate change goals - as well as plant-based foods offer quantifiable health and environmental benefits. This guide offers tools, strategies, and guidance on how cities and counties can advance climate-friendly food procurement.

Climate Adaptation in the Agricultural Sector: Lessons from Vermont

November 2, 2017

This report from the Georgetown Climate Center describes climate-smart agricultural practices and efforts states can take to help farms prepare for climate change impacts. The report also includes a case study of how the State of Vermont supported adaptation in the agricultural sector after Hurricane Irene in 2011, which may be helpful to states and communities recovering from recent storms. The report was authored by Deborah Markowitz, former Secretary of the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources.

NC ADAPT Adaptive Management Strategies for Farms and Forests

January 2017

The North Carolina Agriculture and Forestry Adaptation (NC ADAPT) Work Group investigates the impacts of climate change on North Carolina’s agriculture and forestry sectors, and has developed adaptive management recommendations that producers can use to build operational climate resilience. The Work Group created four stakeholder teams for Commodity Crops, Livestock, Forestry, and Specialty Crops - and developed reports of adaptation needs, priorities and strategies for each of the four focal sectors.

USDA Building Blocks for Climate Smart Agriculture and Forestry: Case Studies

May 2016

The U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Building Blocks for Climate Smart Agriculture and Forestry initiative is the Department's framework for helping farmers, ranchers, and forest land owners respond to climate change. The effort involves voluntary, incentive-based conservation, resilience planning, resource conservation, and energy programs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase carbon sequestration, and expand renewable energy production in the agricultural and forestry sectors. In this report USDA published the results of case studies that demonstrate exemplary climate smart agriculture and forestry practices for each of the ten “building blocks:” Soil Health Nitrogen Stewardship Livestock Partnerships Conservation of Sensitive Lands Grazing and Pasture Lands Private Forest Growth and Retention Stewardship of Federal Forests Promotion of Wood Products Urban Forests Energy Generation and Efficiency Each case study is a one page review describing the sustainability achievements and climate solutions implemented.

Climate Change and Agriculture, Including Aquaculture and Fisheries, in New Jersey

January 2016

The Rutgers Climate Institute put together this fact sheet to provide a brief and accessible summary of the impacts of climate change on agriculture in New Jersey, which includes climate effects that will impact crops, livestock, aquaculture, and fisheries. It explores the primary climate change risks to agriculture and fisheries in the state, and provides short summaries on how these sectors can both adapt to climate risks and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
