Meat of the Matter: A Municipal Guide to Climate-Friendly Food Purchasing

December 7, 2017

The research behind this report suggests that shifting institutional food procurement away from meat and dairy products and towards plant-based options would significantly reduce GHG emissions, and is more sustainable. Eating more plant-based foods is considered essential to meeting climate change goals - as well as plant-based foods offer quantifiable health and environmental benefits. This guide offers tools, strategies, and guidance on how cities and counties can advance climate-friendly food procurement.

Synthesis and Assessment Product (SAP) 4.3: The Effects of Climate Change on Agriculture, Land Resources, Water Resources, and Biodiversity

May 2008

This report is one in a series of 21 Synthesis and Assessment Products (SAPs) produced between 2004 and 2009, aimed at providing current assessments of climate change science in the U. S. to inform public debate, policy, and operational decisions. SAPs are being produced under the auspices of the U. S. Climate Change Science Program (CCSP), which coordinates the climate change research activities of U. S. government agencies. The lead sponsor of this particular assessment product is the U. S.

USDA 2014 Climate Change Adaptation Plan

2014

The 2014 U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Climate Change Adaptation Plan presents strategies and actions to address the effects of climate change on key mission areas including agricultural production, food security, rural development, and forestry and natural resources conservation. The Plan includes input from eleven USDA agencies and offices.   It provides a detailed vulnerability assessment, reviews the elements of USDA’s mission that are at risk from climate change, and provides specific actions and steps being taken to build resilience to climate change.

USGCRP Global Climate Change Impacts in the U.S. - Agriculture

June 2009

This report is one of seven sector-specific chapters from the United States Global Change Research Program's comprehensive 2009 report, "Global Climate Change Impacts in the U. S. "  The 'Agriculture' chapter synthesizes current and projected impacts from climate change to agriculture in the U. S.  The chapter opens with a brief discussion of agriculture's impact on climate change.  The $200 billion U. S. agriculture sector accounts for 13. 5 percent of all human-induced U. S. greenhouse gas emissions (8.

Climate Change Impacts on Water for Agriculture in California: A Case Study in the Sacramento Valley

March 2006

This study presents an application of the Water Evaluation and Planning (WEAP) system for California's Sacramento River Basin. The WEAP modeling system was used to evaluate the impact of four future climate scenarios on agricultural water management in the region, and to investigate whether water management adaptation could reduce potential impacts. This paper demonstrates how internalizing adaptation in a model that includes both the hydrologic and water management conditions associated with climate change can help assess potential tradeoffs in multi-objective water management systems.
