Rising to the Urgent Challenge: Strategic Plan for Responding to Accelerating Climate Change (U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service)

This Strategic Plan by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) serves two primary purposes. First, it provides a vision for the agency to accomplish their mission to “work with others to conserve, protect, and enhance fish, wildlife, and plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people” in the face of accelerating climate change. Second, it provides direction for the organization and its employees; defining the role of the agency within the context of the Department of the Interior and the larger conservation community as it pertains to climate change and conservation.

Climate Change Planning for the Great Plains: Wildlife vulnerability assessment and recommendations for land and grazing management

The result of a project by the Wildlife Conservation Society for the Great Plains Landscape Conservation Cooperative (GP LCC), this report highlights results from a vulnerability assessment of grassland dependent wildlife in the GP LCC geography, with a focus on the species of concern listed in the wildlife action plans of the states within the GP LCC. The assessment team utilized the NatureServe Climate Change Vulnerability Index (CCVI) tool in conducting the assessment (see separate entry for this tool).

Improving the Odds: Using Climate-Readiness to Reduce the Impacts of Climate Change on the Great Lakes Ecosystem

Maryland's Department of Natural Resources Policy Number 2010-11: Building Resilience to Climate Change

Enacted in 2010 by the State of Maryland’s Department of Natural Resources, this document sets forth the Department’s policy to manage the state’s land, natural resources and assets toward better understanding, mitigating and adapting to climate change. In this policy, the Department identifies climate change-related practices, procedures and implementation actions across seven areas: new land investments, facility and infrastructure siting and design, habitat restoration, government operations, research and monitoring, resource planning, and advocacy.

Maryland Department of Natural Resources Policy: “Building Resilience to Climate Change”

As the lead agency in Maryland for climate change adaptation efforts, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) issued this policy to “provide direction and guidance regarding the Department’s investments in and management of land, resources and assets in the face of climate change.” The policy is “to make sound investments in land and facilities and to manage [DNR] assets and natural resources so as to better understand, mitigate and adapt to climate change.”

Climate Change Bird Atlas

This tool helps determine suitable habitat for 147 bird species in the Eastern U. S. (east of the 100th meridian), based on current and projected climate scenarios. This information can then be used to develop large-scale projections of species' responses to climate change. By taking current distributions of bird habitat in the U. S. , and applying a variety of climate scenarios, land managers can predict which areas will be suitable for which species. Information is presented in the following forms: maps of current suitable habitat; maps of suitable habitat projections for the year 2100 under different climate scenarios; and statistical tables providing quantitative estimates of species habitat changes.

Climate Change Tree Atlas

The Climate Change Tree Atlas helps determine current and future suitable habitat and distribution of 134 tree species in the Eastern United States based on current climate and projected suitable habitat for the year 2100. The Atlas provides detailed information on environmental characteristics defining these distributions for each species, and can be used to develop large-scale projections of species responses to climate change. Alaska Department of Fish and Game Climate Change Strategy
November 2010
Recognizing the impacts of climate change, a Climate Change Sub-Cabinet was formed in 2007 to inform the Office of the Governor of Alaska, and to prepare a comprehensive climate change strategy for the state. As part of this effort, each state agency was asked to identify how climate change impacts may affect its ability to meet its mission. Because a changing climate is anticipated to affect the sustainability of Alaska’s fish and wildlife resources and their uses, it is of interest to the department to assess the likely effects of climate change on fish and wildlife and their uses and to develop adaptation strategies to address these effects.
