Climate Change Preparedness and the Small Business Sector

Small businesses can suffer lasting economic damage from a single extreme weather event. Unlike larger businesses, they lack access to capital, often operate from a single storefront, and are heavily dependent on the local community for business activity. Prepared by the Small Business Majority and the American Sustainable Business Council, this report includes case studies on how small businesses across a range of sectors have incorporated climate change resilience into their business planning and management.

The diverse group of companies involved in this report include Starbucks, Swiss Re, Levi Strauss, Calvert Investments, Earth Networks, Entergy and Green Mountain Coffee Roasters who worked with consulting firms including Acclimatise, Oxfam America and BSR.

South Florida Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy 2012-2107

September 2012

The Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) for South Florida is a plan to support the regional economy of Broward, Miami. Dade, and Monroe Counties. The CEDS will guide federal and state investment priorities and funding sources, and delineates lead organizations responsibilities for execution of the CEDS. The strategy takes into account the region’s vulnerability to climate impacts, and discusses advance preparation and adaptation, as well as the necessity for South Florida to become disaster resilient to remain economically strong.

Maryland Climate Change Insurance Advisory Committee Report

2010

Maryland’s 2008 Climate Action Plan, the "Comprehensive Strategy for Reducing Maryland’s Vulnerability to Climate Change – Phase I: Sea-level rise and coastal storms," established a recommendation to create an advisory committee to “advise the State of the risks that climate change poses to the availability and affordability of insurance” to consumers and business in Maryland. The Climate Change Insurance Advisory Committee was subsequently created and issued this report in 2010 to implement the recommendation.

The Effects of Climate Change on the Downhill Skiing and Recreational Fishing Economy in the Crown of the Continent

January 2011

This report focuses on the Montana portion of the "Crown of the Continent" region, the home of Glacier National Park and extensive protected wilderness areas where recreational fishing and downhill skiing have have contributed significantly to population and job growth. The impacts of climate change on these industries are analyzed, which are susceptible to changes in temperature, snowpack, and the timing of precipitation.

Climate Change in Park City, Utah: An Assessment of Climate, Snowpack, and Economic Impacts

This study examines how the snowpack at the Park City ski area, in the Wasatch Mountains of north central Utah, may be impacted by climate change, and how the regional economy could subsequently be impacted because of changes in winter tourism. The research and analysis was provided by Stratus Consulting for the Park City Foundation - a community foundation that promotes philanthropy, and partners with the nonprofit community to strengthen the greater Park City region.
