Potential for Shoreline Changes Due to Sea-Level Rise Along the U.S. Mid-Atlantic Region

2007

In 2007, thirteen scientists convened for a two-day meeting to exchange  information and develop a consensus opinion on potential future coastal changes for the mid-Atlantic coast in response to sea-level rise. This 2007 report is the result of this workshop, providing an overview of how sea level rise could impact mid-Atlantic coast landforms, from New York to Virginia. Four different scenarios for sea level rise were considered and applied to specific areas of the Atlantic coast: a) the long-term sea-level rise rate observed over the 20th century would persist over the 21st century; b) the 20th century rate would increase by 2 mm/yr; c) the 20th century rate would increase by 7 mm/yr; and d) sea-level would rise by 2 m over the next few hundred years.

South Florida Sea Level Rise Project Final Report

September 2005

This report presents the results of a study conducted by the South Florida Regional Planning Council (SFRPC) to distinguish areas that are likely to experience erosion, inundation and flooding due to sea level rise in the region. The Study Area included the three counties in the SFRPC’s region: Miami-Dade, Broward and Monroe County, Florida.

Future Sea Level Rise and the New Jersey Coast

June 2005

This study presents an assessment of potential impacts of sea level rise on the New Jersey coast.   Using historical flood data, digital elevation models, and climate change projections, the authors found that sea level rise will submerge 1-3% of coastal lands, and 6. 5-9% of coastal land will be affected by periodic flooding.   The study looks at Cape May Point as a case study for potential impacts on socioeconomic and natural resources that would be relevant to other coastal areas.   Finally, the authors broadly identify a gradual retreat strategy for adaptation.

Sea Level Rise and Global Climate Change: A Review of Impacts to U.S. Coasts

February 2000

This early report, published by the Pew Center on Global Climate Change (now Center for Climate and Energy Solutions, C2ES), describes the threat that sea level rise poses, and identifies the specific types of impacts this phenomenon will likely have. The state of understanding of the impacts on U.S. coasts is reviewed, and impacts described include inundation of wetlands and lowlands, coastal erosion, increased vulnerability to flooding, and salinization of the water supply.

Coastal Flooding in the Northeast United States Due to Climate Change

December 2007

This report assesses the affects of sea level rise (SLR) on storm surge and flooding in the northeastern United States.   In this study, historical sea level information for storm surge anomalies at five sites in the region (from Massachusetts to New Jersey) was compiled and the impacts of climate change and local sea level effects were then added to this analysis. The change in recurrence intervals of storm surges due to possible SLR scenarios is estimated. Also, the study compares the boundaries of a 100-year coastal storm flooding event in Boston developed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) with the flooding boundaries of these estimated storm surges for 2005 and 2100 to further prepare for the potential social and economic impacts of climate change on coastal areas.

Lessons Learned from Delaware Lidar

A case study of Delaware's efforts to obtain LiDAR elevation maps of its coastline and the lessons that can be learned from the process, this short report may be useful to other states or localities looking to assess impacts from sea level rise and storm surge using LiDAR technology. After describing Delaware's need for LiDAR data in its coastal planning process, the authors address the specific lessons the state learned. These lessons relate to the need for properly scoping and defining a LiDAR mapping project, the need for data standardization, and the need to ensure that end users (in this case, planners) are sufficiently competent with information systems to put the elevation data to good use.
