Coastal Vulnerability Assessment of the Northern Gulf of Mexico to Sea-Level Rise and Coastal Change

This report, prepared by the U. S. Geologic Survey, uses an index to assess the vulnerability of the Gulf Coast - from Galveston, Texas to Panama City, Florida. The Coastal Vulnerability Index (CVI) applied is based on six factors that influence the risk sea-level rise poses: geomorphology, historical shoreline change rate, regional coastal slope, relative sea-level change, mean significant wave height, and mean tidal range. CVI data can be used in at least two ways: (1) as a way of identifying areas where physical changes are most likely to occur as sea-level rises, and (2) as a planning tool for managing and protecting resources along the Northern Gulf of Mexico.

Guam Coastal Management Program - Section 309 Assessments and Strategy 2011 - 2015

The Guam Coastal Management Program (GCMP) completed assessment and strategy documents in 1991, 1997, 2001, and 2006. This 2010 update provides an opportunity to review the program's accomplishments as well as its strategy for handling new challenges and changing scenarios facing Guam. This update also reflects changes that are based on the single biggest event to happen on Guam since World War II: a massive Department of Defense buildup.

Virginia Special Places in Peril: Jamestown, Chincoteague, and Shenandoah Threatened by Climate Disruption
September 2010
This report examines, in detail, the threats that climate change presents to Jamestown, Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, and Shenandoah National Park. For each of these impacts, the report identifies the potential economic losses that could result from the loss of ecosystems and tourism. The authors provide downscaled information about climate threats, including projected temperature increases for each of the three sites. Additionally, the report characterizes the threat sea-level rise and erosion pose to Jamestown and Chincoteague.

Climate Ready Estuaries: A Blueprint for Change

This report summarizes key findings and recommendations for climate change adaptation in the region surrounding North Carolina's Albemarle-Pamlico National Estuary Program (APNEP), which is part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Climate Ready Estuaries Program. Recommendations to improve the area’s resilience and adaptation capacity, including specific recommendations to the APNEP policy board are included.

State of California Sea-Level Rise Interim Guidance Document

Developed from a partnership between the Gulf of Mexico Alliance, the Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consortium, Louisiana Sea Grant, Texas Sea Grant, Florida Sea Grant, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Coastal Storms Program and the Gulf of Mexico Program, the Coastal Resilience Index was designed to help every coastal community become more resilient to the impacts of climate change, such as sea level rise, storm surge and flooding.

Climate Ready Estuaries 2010 Progress Report

California King Tides Initiative
The California King Tides Initiative encourages members of the public to document (photograph) the highest seasonal tides (or king tides) that occur along the state’s coast. Seasonal high tide events can provide a preview of what might be experienced regularly in the future as a result of rising sea levels. King tide events are an opportunity to share what you see in your community with others.

Influence of Potential Sea Level Rise on Societal Vulnerability to Hurricane Storm-Surge Hazards in Sarasota County, Florida

Although the potential for hurricanes under current climatic conditions continue to threaten coastal communities, there is concern that climate change, specifically potential increases in sea level, could influence the impacts of future hurricanes. To examine the potential effect of sea level rise on community vulnerability to future hurricanes, (the authors) assess variations in socio-economic exposure in Sarasota County, FL, to contemporary hurricane storm-surge hazards and to storm-surge hazards enhanced by sea level rise scenarios. Analysis indicates that significant portions of the population, economic activity, and critical facilities are in contemporary and future hurricane storm-surge hazard zones.

Climate Change and Sea-Level Rise in Florida: An Update of the Effects of Climate Change on Florida's Ocean and Coastal Resources

In 2009, the Florida Oceans and Coastal Council (FOCC) published a report entitled 'The Effects of Climate Change on Florida’s Ocean and Coastal Resources. ' That report focused on what was known, and was possible concerning climate-change effects on the state’s ocean and coastal resources. This report updates and expands a section addressing sea level rise in the 2009 report. This update involved contributions by 5 Council members, 12 contributing authors, and 11 external reviewers whose technical contributions were based principally on literature published by August 2010.
