Atoll Island States and Climate Change: Sovereignty Implications
October 2011
This article, by two researchers of the United Nations University (UNU) Institute for Advanced Studies, summarizes a working paper in which they examine questions of long-term survival for Atoll Island States. These countries could become uninhabitable or submerged in the course of the next century due to sea-level rise and coastal erosion, exacerbated by stronger tropical cyclones. Prominent vulnerable island nations include Kiribati, Tuvalu, the Marshall Islands and the Maldives.

San Francisco Bay Plan (California)
October 6, 2011
The San Francisco Bay Plan contains the policies that the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC) uses to determine whether permit applications can be approved for projects within the Commission’s jurisdiction, which consists of the Bay, salt ponds, managed wetlands, certain waterways and land within 100 feet of the Bay. On October 6, 2011, the BCDC unanimously approved an amendment to the Plan to update the 22-year-old sea level rise findings and policies and more broadly address climate change adaptation.

Sea Level Rise Strategic Plan Anne Arundel County, Maryland
November 2011
This report provides an assessment of the vulnerability of Anne Arundel County to sea level rise and makes recommendations for improving the community’s coastal climate resilience. It presents both an analysis into projected impacts and a discussion regarding adaptation goals for seven key sectors and assets throughout the county. Anne Arundel County is located on the coast of Maryland, and is “almost completely surrounded by tidal and non-tidal waterways. ” The county is home to the state capital, Annapolis, and a number of smaller communities.

Planning for Sea Level Rise in the Northeast: Considerations for the Implementation of Tidal Wetland Habitat Restoration Projects
November 2011
This report is based on the results of a workshop held by the Northeast Region of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Restoration Center. This document provides a review of sea level rise (SLR) impacts on tidal wetlands in the Northeast as well as step-by-step guidance on the incorporation of relative sea level rise into tidal wetland restoration design. The report outlines a five part process to guide impact analyses and planning during their feasibility, design and monitoring phases.

Sea-Level Rise and Coastal Land Use in Hawaii: A Policy Tool Kit for State and Local Governments
December 2011
This Policy Tool Kit was developed by the Center for Island Climate Adaptation and Policy (“ICAP”) and the University of Hawai‘i Sea Grant College Program. The Tool Kit surveys state adaptation plans, federal efforts, and other key sources to identify and discuss important land use policy tools for Hawai‘i, and suggests how these policies can be used by state and local governments to avoid or lessen the impacts of sea-level rise and related coastal hazards.
