Climate Ready Estuaries 2009 Progress Report

2009

This report details progress made in the Climate Ready Estuaries (CRE) program from its inception, in 2008, through 2009. CRE, in partnership with the National Estuaries Program (NEP), is helping estuaries assess their vulnerability to climate change impacts, engage stakeholders and develop monitoring and adaptation plans. Together with the 2010 CRE Progress Report, these reports provide a summary on the design and accomplishments of CRE to date, as well as next steps.

The Role of Coastal Zone Management Programs in Adaptation to Climate Change: Second Annual Report of the Coastal States Organization's Climate Change Work Group

September 2008

This report, prepared by the Coastal States Organization's Climate Change Work Group, is the product of a survey that attempted to assess what resources the states' coastal managers need in order to draft and implement climate change adaptation plans. The survey captures where the respondents were in the process of planning for climate change, what resources they would need for planning, and how much these resources would cost. The results place a great deal of focus on the need for technology, as well as mapping and modeling data for the planning process.

Gulf Coast Governors' Action Plan II: For Healthy and Resilient Coasts (2009-2014)

2009

The Gulf of Mexico Alliance, a network of federal agencies and Gulf Coast state agencies, resource managers and planners, prepared this 5-year regional plan for action that addresses several climate related issues facing the Gulf. The plan addresses four distinct challenges: 1) the need to maintain healthy Gulf Coast economies while using coastal resources sustainably; 2) the imperative of improving the health of Gulf ecosystems; 3) adapting to sea-level rise; and 4) mitigating the effects of decreased water quality.

Hazard Awareness and Risk Mitigation in Integrated Coastal Area Management

2009

This report from the United Nations' Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) provides broad guidelines for coastal planners related to the risks presented by tsunamis, storm surge, extreme wind-forced waves, coastal erosion, and the effects rising sea levels. These guidelines are intended to assist federal and local policy makers and coastal managers and planners in the reduction of the risks to coastal communities, their infrastructure, and service-providing ecosystems from coastal hazards being exacerbated by climate change.

FIT Virtual Climate Adaptation Library

The Virtual Climate Adaptation Library, provided by the Florida Institute of Technology (FIT), is a free online database built to foster advances in adaptation planning for sea level rise. FIT's goal for the virtual library is to maintain and expand cloud computing archives on planning and adaptation for coastal change at local through international scales.   Over 650 reports and articles are within 13 regional directories and more than 80 subdirectories.   English, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese, French and Arabic information is currently represented.

The Status of the Coral Reef Ecosystems of Guam

December 2008

This report provides an assessment of the status of the coral reef ecosystems of Guam between 2004 and 2007. The findings of various monitoring activities, assessments, and stand-alone investigations conducted by local and federal agencies, educational/research institutions, and government contractors since 2004 were synthesized to obtain an updated, holistic view of the status of Guam’s reefs. Climate change is addressed as a significant factor in the decline of the coral reef in Guam.   'Climate Change, Coral Bleaching, and Ocean Acidification' is a sub-section of the report explaining that coral bleaching is an emerging threat, and will likely grow more severe with increasing sea surface temperatures associated with global climate change.
