Social Science Tools for Coastal Programs - Introduction to Stakeholder Participation

This guide, published by the NOAA Coastal Services Center (CSC), introduces coastal managers to concepts of stakeholder analysis and engagement. The document explains how different stakeholder groups and their interests should be identified during the coastal planning process. Additionally, NOAA CSC provides the reader with guidance for when and how during the coastal planning process stakeholders should be engaged. Additionally, the document provides guidance on identifying coastal management stakeholders, describes some of the most commonly used techniques for stakeholder participation, and discusses evaluation of stakeholder participation.

Sea Level Rise Visualization for Alabama, Mississippi and Florida
This online map displays those areas that will be submerged during high tide as the result of sea- level rise on the Alabama, Mississippi, and part of Florida's coasts Populations, roads, infrastructure (ie., airports) and other viewing options are available to assess the areas at risk of inundation under different scenarios (1 meter, 2,3,4,5).

CanVis
CanVis is a visualization program used to "see" potential impacts from coastal development or sea-level rise. The software allows users to download background pictures and insert objects like hotels, houses, and marinas, and adjust sea level to observe impacts of sea level rise on coastal development. The software is used by municipalities to brainstorm new ideas and policies, undertake project planning, and make presentations. .

This two-day training course for floodplain managers, National Weather Service personnel, and county, state, and municipal officials (including planners, emergency managers, and coastal resource managers) provides an overview of flood and inundation mapping methods. Gulf of Mexico Climate Change Adaptation Inventory

The Climate Change Adaptation Inventory is a compilation of climate adaptation activities and research initiatives taking place at the federal, state, and local levels in communities adjacent to the Gulf of Mexico. The inventory focuses specifically on those projects and efforts that address climate change or sea level rise. Research activities captured by the inventory are limited to those projects that have applications to coastal communities, particularly planning and development, land management, and socioeconomic initiatives.

Maryland Coastal Adaptation Report Card 2021
January 21, 2022
On January 21, 2022, the Maryland Commission on Climate Change’s Adaptation and Resiliency Work Group in collaboration with the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science Integration and Application Network (UMCES-IAN) released the 2021 Maryland Coastal Adaptation Report Card. Informed by stakeholder engagement, the Coastal Adaptation Report Card “gives a snapshot of the current adaptation status in Maryland’s coastal zone, and establishes a framework for measuring future progress.

Louisiana’s Coastal Master Plan – Projects to Protect Transportation Infrastructure
March 2012
In 2012, Louisiana’s Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA) developed a Coastal Master Plan to provide a system-wide plan for reducing hurricane flood risk and restoring land along the Louisiana coast. The Plan defines a set of coastal protection and restoration projects to be implemented by the state over the next 50 years. Six of these projects create wetlands in order to protect sections of Louisiana’s highways. The criteria used for selecting projects consider future climate impacts.

Sea Level Rise Adaptation Strategy for San Diego Bay, California
January 2012
The San Diego Bay Sea Level Rise Strategy provides a regional approach to sea level rise adaptation, and is a foundation to guide coordinated adaptation planning among participating local jurisdictions. The strategy was prepared by ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability, and resulted from the efforts of a collaborative, regional stakeholder process undertaken as part of the San Diego Regional Climate Protection Initiative, a partnership with the San Diego Foundation and all local governments in the San Diego region.
