This SAP summarizes currently knowledge about direct and indirect effects of climate change on energy consumption, production, and supply in the U.S.

Pacific Gas and Electric Company Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment and Resilience Strategies

The Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E)'s Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment and Resilience Strategies report describes the utility provider’s risk exposure to climatic hazards, as well as progress the company has made and the plans it has to address climate change impacts across California. As described in the report, “PG&E is one of the largest combined natural gas and electric companies in the U. S. Based in San Francisco, with more than 23,000 employees, the company delivers some of the nation’s cleanest energy to nearly 16 million people throughout a 70,000-square-mile service area in Northern and Central California.

Colorado Climate Vulnerability Study

January 2015

The Western Water Assessment (WWA), in collaboration with Colorado State University, conducted this climate vulnerability study for the state of Colorado. Drawing from existing data and peer-reviewed research, the assessment summarizes the key impacts in seven sectors: ecosystems, water, agriculture, energy, transportation, outdoor recreation and tourism, and public health. It also details current adaptive capacity and potential strategies in those sectors to meet future climate challenges - providing a background for preparedness planning.

New Jersey Energy Resilience Bank Grant and Loan Financing Program Guide

October 14, 2014

Created using $200 million of Community Development Block Grant – Disaster Recovery funds from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the New Jersey Energy Resilience Bank (ERB) provides funding for new or retrofitted distributed energy resources (DER) technologies that allow facilities to continue to operate at critical load in the event of losing power because of extreme weather.

DOE Weatherization Assistance Program

December 22, 1975

The Department of Energy (DOE)’s Weatherization Assistance Program (CFDA Program Number 81.042) provides formula and project grants to states to fund cost-effective measures that improve the energy efficiency of homes, particularly the homes of elderly and low-income individuals. These governments in turn contract with local governments and nonprofit agencies to provide weatherization services to those in need using the latest technologies for home energy upgrades.

Owning the Benefits of Solar+Storage: New Ownership and Investment Models for Affordable Housing and Community Facilities

February 2018

This policy paper examines five models for financing solar PV coupled with battery storage (solar + storage) with the aim of identifying solutions for increasing access to renewable energy in affordable housing and community facilities serving low- to moderate-income (LMI) communities. Solar + storage can reduce utility bills, increase the resilience of power systems, and, in some cases, can lead to revenue from grid services. For these reasons, solar + storage is seen as an equity strategy that can benefit LMI communities.

California Energy Commission Public Interest Energy Research Program (PIER)

Administered by the California Energy Commission, the Public Interest Energy Research Program (PIER) was created to advance science and technology in the fields of energy efficiency, renewable energy, advanced electricity technologies, energy-related environmental protection, transmission and distribution, and transportation technologies. The PIER Program awards up to $62 million annually to support new energy services and products that create statewide environmental and economic benefits. Priority research areas defined in PIER’s five-year Climate Change Research Plan are: monitoring, analysis, and modeling of climate; analysis of options to reduce greenhouse gas emissions; assessment of physical impacts and of adaptation strategies; and analysis of the economic consequences of both climate change impacts and the efforts designed to reduce emissions.

New York State Prize - Community Microgrid Competition (NY Prize)

2015

The “NY Prize” competition is administered by New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), to support New York State communities innovation in electricity grid planning and development. Microgrids are stand-alone energy systems that can separate from the larger electrical grid to operate independently in the event of a power outage. During extreme weather events or emergencies, microgrids can provide power to individual customers and critical public services such as hospitals, first responders, and water treatment facilities.

Chicago’s Building Energy Programs

September 2013

The City of Chicago adapted energy efficiency policies for both commercial and residential buildings to support both its mitigation and adaptation goals. Waste heat from energy consumption has been estimated to account for about one-third of the urban heat island effect, in some US cities, and energy efficiency policies can be an effective strategy and mitigating these effects.
