Hoboken, New Jersey Green Infrastructure Strategic Plan

The City of Hoboken, New Jersey published its Green Infrastructure Strategic Plan in October 2013 to create a framework for city-wide green infrastructure investments as a mechanism for improving storm water management, controlling flooding, and preparing for future climate change. It also encourages policy changes, such as zoning requirements and incentives, pilot projects, and plans for public lands and rights-of-way.

Harvesting the Value of Water: Stormwater, Green Infrastructure, and Real Estate

2017

The Urban Land Institute has found that real estate developers are incorporating green infrastructure stormwater management requirements into their business models. This report analyzes current stormwater policies and describes a variety of real estate development projects that have responded to them. The report details some of the latest advancements in stormwater management regulations cities are taking to address aging infrastructure, combined sewer overflows, and flood frequency, that are amplified by climate change.

Climate Change Vulnerability Analysis for the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewage District

October 2014

The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewage District (District) requested this vulnerability analysis report, which assesses how climate change will impact the District’s existing, as well as proposed, infrastructure and services. The analysis aims to provide the District with the information needed to make strategic planning decisions, such as capital investments. The report documents how climate change may increase flood events and combined sewer overflow volume during larger precipitation events, and increase risk of odor and corrosion within wastewater facilities as well as decreased flow in waterways during periods of warm weather and drought.

Climate Resilience Evaluation and Awareness Tool (CREAT) 3.0

This risk assessment tool assists drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater utility owners and operators in understanding potential climate change impacts to the water sector; assessing related risks at their utilities; and evaluating adaptation options. CREAT allows users to perform these analyses using scenario-based decision making in multiple time periods using pre-loaded data and downscaled local climate information.  CREAT can support utilities in initiating adaptation planning and provides suggested customizable adaptation strategies that can be implemented at the user’s utility.

Climate Ready Water Utilities Adaptation Strategies Guide for Water Utilities

February 2015

EPA prepared this Guide as part of its Climate Ready Water Utilities Initiative. The Guide presents the projected climate change impacts and adaptation options for drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater utility, for nine regions across the U.S. Detailed examples of adaptation strategies are provided, including those from utilities which have successfully implemented adaptation strategies.

Evaluation of Combined Heat and Power Technologies for Wastewater Treatment Facilities

September 25, 2012

The report was developed by Columbus Water Works, under an assistance agreement awarded by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in support of their Columbus Biosolids Flow-Through Thermophilic Treatment National Demonstration Project. The report examines common combined heat and power (CHP) technologies for converting anaerobic digester gas to electrical power and produce heat.  The document includes technical and cost information to assist users in considering using more efficient, sustainable, and cost-effective wastewater treatment and in-plant wet weather management technologies.

DC Water Environmental Impact Bond

September 29, 2016

DC Water and Sewer Authority (DC Water), the water utility in Washington, D. C. , has announced the nation’s first Environmental Impact Bond (EIB), an innovative bond to fund the construction of green infrastructure to manage stormwater runoff and improve the District’s water quality. The $25 million, tax-exempt EIB was sold in a private placement to the Goldman Sachs Urban Investment Group and Calvert Foundation to fund the initial green infrastructure project in its DC Clean Rivers Project, a $2.

San Francisco Public Utilities Commission Green Infrastructure Projects

2016

San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) is implementing multiple green infrastructure projects based on their Urban Watershed Assessment, which will identify green and grey sewer infrastructure improvements over the next twenty years.  The SFPUC recognizes that the sewer system, treating both sewage and stormwater runoff, was not built to withstand the impacts of climate change - such as intense rainstorms that overwhelm the system. The watershed-based planning process is being used to help plan the City’s Sewer System Improvement Program (SSIP), a multi-billion dollar project to to upgrade aging infrastructure, and ensure the reliability and performance of the sewer system.

Miami Beach, Florida Stormwater Management Master Plan

August 17, 2012

In 2012, the City of Miami Beach, Florida approved an updated city-wide Comprehensive Stormwater Management Master Plan (SWMMP). The plan includes strategies for improving stormwater management practices, coastal infrastructure, funding, and regulatory policies. The plan accounts for sea level rise impacts on stormwater in the City, and provides planning flexibility for various rates of sea level rise. The SWMMP is intended to be a guide for improving Miami Beach’s stormwater management system flood control and water quality performance for the next 20 years, with considerations of potential sea level rise over 20-years of stormwater infrastructure and a 50-year planning horizon for sea wall heights.
