The Impact of Climate Change on New Mexico's Water Supply and Ability to Manage Water Resources

The intent of this report is to increase awareness of, and support for, the integration of climate change into existing water management planning efforts and operations. This report reviews the climate science and related impacts on New Mexico's water resources; provides adaptive management strategies for sustainable use of current water supplies; and offers information on integrating effects of climate change into water operations and management planning. .

Water Needs and Strategies for a Sustainable Future

June 2006

This report, along with the 2008 report, "Water Needs and Strategies for a Sustainable Future: Next Steps," include consensus recommendations and action items to both encourage and assist local, state and federal planners and managers and private sector partners to coordinate effectively to prepare for and address challenges of over-appropriated watersheds, population growth, land use changes, water needs for in-stream uses, and water supply and water management strategies in Western states. These reports address six specific issues, including: examining water policies and population growth, providing water supply to meet future demands, maintaining water supply infrastructure, resolving Indian water rights, preparing for climate change, and conserving endangered species.

Climate and Land Use Change Effects on Ecological Resources in Three Watersheds: A Synthesis Report

August 2007

The effects of global change drivers differ by place and in scale, necessitating place-specific impacts information to enable stakeholders to respond appropriately. Place and scale also determine appropriate adaptation strategies and expected outcomes. Three watershed case study assessments were conducted to advance the capability of managers to consider climate and land use change in watershed management decisions. The case studies were of the San Pedro River Watershed, the Sacramento River Watershed, and several small watersheds in Maryland (see Related Links).

Aquarius: A Modeling System for River Basin Water Allocation

Aquarius is a software application developed by the Rocky Mountain Research Station of the U. S Forest Service and Colorado State University. The modeling system depicts the temporal and spatial allocation of water flows among competing traditional and nontraditional water uses in a river basin. The program can be used to determine economically efficient water destination strategies by systematically examining, using a nonlinear optimization technique, the feasibility of reallocating unused or marginally valuable water storage and releases in favor of alternative uses.

Using Climate Forecasts for Drought Management

January 2006

This report synthesizes a 4-year study of the use of the climate forecasts for drought management in the state of Georgia. The study investigates the needs and potential benefits of seasonal forecast information for water management. It provides a method for translating NOAA Climate Prediction Center (CPC) seasonal precipitation outlooks into a forecast precipitation index (FPI) that is tailored for water managers in the southeastern United States. This case study is also beneficial, as it represents the integration of climate forecasts into decision-making procedures for a public agency, and provides the economic valuation of that forecast information.

Climate Change and Water Quality in the Great Lakes Basin

August 2003

This multi-dimensional report from the Great Lakes Water Quality Board of the International Joint Commission is written for a cross-section of science, business, resource management, and policy experts in the Great Lakes region. Section 2 provides an overview of climate change and variability projections for the region, including air temperature, precipitation, evapotranspiration, water supply, water levels, ice cover, and water quality. Projected impacts are then provided in Section 3 pertaining to the following sectors: human health, ecosystems and biodiversity, agriculture, fish and wildlife, forests, and recreation and tourism.
