Guidance for Incorporating Sea Level Rise into Capital Planning in San Francisco

This Guidance presents a framework for considering sea level rise within the capital planning process for the City and County of San Francisco (CCSF). Adopted by the Capital Planning Committee (CPC) September 2014, the Guidance provides direction to all departments on how to incorporate sea level rise into new construction, capital improvement, and maintenance projects.

U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Climate Change Adaptation Plan

As part of President Obama’s Climate Action Plan, Federal agencies released their agency Sustainability Plans and Climate Change Adaptation Plans on October 31, 2014. The agencies have been directed to assess their vulnerabilities to climate change impacts in these plans, and to outline how they will protect Federal programs, assets and investments.

San Francisco’s Guidance for Incorporating Sea-Level Rise in Capital Planning – Transportation Implications

The City and County of San Francisco (CCSF) adopted Guidance on how city and county agencies must consider sea-level rise for new capital improvement projects, including transportation improvements. The Guidance was adopted by the Capital Planning Committee (CPC) in September 2014 and revised in December 2015; the CPC makes recommendations to the Mayor and Board of Supervisors on all capital expenditures and approves the City’s 10-year Capital Improvement Plan. The Guidance provides direction to all CCSF departments on how to consider sea-level rise in all new construction, capital improvement, and maintenance projects.

The ‘Oregon Climate and Health Profile Report’ from the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) Public Health Division outlines the health risks that may increase with climate change, and describes the populations who are most vulnerable to these risks in Oregon. The report presents a broad, statewide assessment of public health demographic, geographic and occupational vulnerability to climate change risks.

Audubon Birds and Climate Change Report
September 8, 2014
This report from the National Audubon Society presents the results of a seven year scientific study predicting the potential impact of climate change on 588 North American bird species. Based on four decades of bird census data, this is the broadest and most detailed study of its kind, and according to Audubon, “it’s the closest thing we have to a field guide to the future of North American birds.”

Planning for Flood Recovery and Long-Term Resilience in Vermont: Smart Growth Approaches for Disaster Resilient Communities

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) have partnered to provide Vermont with technical assistance in planning for long-term flood resilience. The goal of the collaboration is to incorporate smart growth principles into local policies, development regulations, and hazard mitigation plans. The project is a product of EPA's year-long Smart Growth Implementation Assistance project in Vermont.

Risky Business: The Economic Risks of Climate Change to the United States, Final report

‘Risky Business’ estimates the impact of projected changes in temperature, precipitation, sea levels, and storm activity on the U. S. economy. The report presents a new approach to understanding climate risks for key U. S. business sectors, and provides business leaders with a framework for measuring and mitigating their own exposure to climate risk. The Risky Business research focused on damage to coastal property and infrastructure from rising sea levels and increased storm surge, climate-driven changes in agricultural production and energy demand, and the impact of higher temperatures on labor productivity and public health.
