Buy-in for Buyouts: The Case for Managed Retreat from Flood Zones

2016

In this report, the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy and the Regional Plan Association present best practices for state and local governments to encourage residents and communities vulnerable to flooding to relocate from coastal and riverine areas through managed retreat. Based on the experiences of communities in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut following Hurricanes Sandy (2012) and Irene (2011), the report summarizes the political, social, and economic challenges of using buyouts and acquisitions as an adaptation strategy.

Climate Resiliency: Design Reference Guide for New Developments in Boston, Massachusetts

August 2018

The Boston Environment Department developed this Reference Guide to help developers comply with the Resilient Design Checklist required by updates to Article 80 of Boston's Zoning Code and the Green Building Standards required by amendments to Article 37 of the City's Zoning Code. The Reference Guide helps developers evaluate the project site and design conditions, identify mitigation and adaptation strategies to incorporate into the project design, and access resources to help comply with the City's resilience and green building design requirements.
