FHWA Transportation Engineering Approaches to Climate Resiliency (TEACR) Study

The Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) Transportation Engineering Approaches to Climate Resiliency (TEACR) study is designed to help identify best engineering practices for evaluating project-specific vulnerabilities to climate change impacts and extreme weather events, and for developing adaptation solutions to address those vulnerabilities. The study helps to address the challenges that engineers face in translating climate science into project-level design specifications, by developing solutions and methodologies that engineers across the country can apply when planning and designing projects in different project contexts.

Rural Climate Dialogues: Minnesota State Convening

September 2016

This brief report summarizes “Dialogues” or discussions between Minnesota state agencies and local community members to begin planning for climate change and resilience in rural Minnesota.  The Jefferson Center and the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy convened three Rural Climate Dialogues - in Stevens, Itasca, and Winona Counties - generating “deliberative public engagement” and a shared community response to address climate change. A common priority expressed by all three communities was the need to support local initiatives through state agencies and programs.

Vermont Climate and Health Profile Report: Building Resilience against Climate Change in Vermont

September 2016

The Vermont Department of Health completed a comprehensive assessment of public health impacts of climate change, as a step toward furthering development of public health adaptation strategies for the state. The report summarizes climate trends and future projections for Vermont; synthesizes the health impacts of climate change, and evaluates the public health threat posed by each exposure in the context of Vermont-specific climate projections. The work is supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and utilizes the process as defined in the CDC’s Building Resilience against Climate Effects (BRACE) framework.

2016 City of Imperial Beach Sea Level Rise Assessment

September 2016

The City of Imperial Beach is a mostly residential community located in San Diego County, California. With 1. 5 miles of coastline and waterbodies adjacent to three sides of the city, Imperial Beach is vulnerable to climate change-induced sea-level rise and flooding. This assessment projects sea-level rise along the coastline, assesses the associated risks to coastal resources and development, and evaluates adaptation strategies. Proposed near-term policy approaches include updating the zoning code with hazard zone overlays, developing a beach management plan, and working with state and federal partners to address vulnerabilities.

California Climate Adaptation Storybook

2016

The California Natural Resources Agency’s Climate Change Team designed the Climate Adaptation Storybook with input from community leaders, scientists, government officials, and artists specifically for people who are not yet very familiar with climate adaptation. The 20-page storybook highlights projects and policies, ranging from educational programs to loan funding, to help communities and decision-makers envision the future. Fourteen projects from across the state highlights ways to address food security, drought relief, water efficiency programs, loan programs for rural communities, cool roofs in cities, and more.
