National Park Service Coastal Adaptation Strategies: Case Studies

This National Park Service report reviews the successful implementation of coastal climate adaptation strategies through 24 case studies of coastal adaptation projects in National Parks. The adaptation efforts described include historic structure preservation, archeological surveys, baseline data collection and documentation, habitat restoration, engineering solutions, redesign and relocation of infrastructure, and development of broad management plans that consider climate change.

Developing Socio-Economic Metrics to Measure DOI Hurricane Sandy Project and Program Outcomes

U. S. Department of Interior resilience projects developed in response to Hurricane Sandy were examined for their performance as related to goals and actual outcomes. DOI has in turn developed metrics to measure changes in ecological resilience resulting from the DOI-sponsored projects, and determined that a separate analysis was needed for the development of socio-economic metrics. This report summarizes the DOI investment portfolio; the process to develop socio-economic metrics for the habitat and activities of existing and future coastal resilience efforts; and reviews the application of the socioeconomic and ecological metrics from project, region, and programmatic scales.

Retrofit Chicago: Retrofit Chicago is a cross-sector effort led by the Mayor’s Office to drive energy efficiency in municipal, commercial, and residential buildings across the city, which works to save money, reduce carbon emissions, and create jobs. The Residential Partnership unites non-profit groups and utility companies to better connect residents to energy retrofit contractors, free energy upgrades, and equipment rebates. Other customer benefits include free energy assessments with free energy-saving products and installation; rebates for energy-efficient appliances and other products; financing tools such as income qualifying grants for bungalow & vintage homeowners; energy savers loans; and on-bill financing and connection to qualified contractors.

Developing Urban Climate Adaptation Indicators
2016
The Urban Sustainability Directors Network (USDN) in partnership with the Institute for Sustainable Communities evaluated seven existing sets of climate indicators to determine if any of these frameworks could be adapted to serve city-level needs for evaluating and reporting progress on climate adaptation goals. This report summarizes their assessment. They determined that none of the existing frameworks serve the needs of cities perfectly, but many offer insights that can guide USDN members as they develop their own sets of indicators.

U.S. GAO report: Climate Change - Selected Government Approaches (GAO 16-454)

This Government Accountability Office (GAO) report compares the adaptation efforts of the United States with those of five foreign governments: the European Union (EU), Mexico, the Netherlands, the Philippines, and the United Kingdom (UK). The report describes the plans, laws, and programs that have been adopted in each country to promote adaptation and resilience. The report also looks at how each country is coordinating across government agencies, funding adaptation initiatives, and monitoring and evaluating the efficacy of adaptation actions.
