Abrupt Impacts of Climate Change: Anticipating Surprises

December 3, 2013

From the National Academies’ Committee on Understanding and Monitoring Abrupt Climate Change and Its Impacts, Abrupt Impacts of Climate Change was published in paperback format, and is made available in PDF format on the Academies website. This publication summarizes the current state of knowledge on potential abrupt changes to the ocean, atmosphere, ecosystems, and high latitude areas; explores how to monitor climate change for warnings of abrupt changes and emerging impacts; and identifies key research and monitoring needs.

Niches, models, and climate change: Assessing the assumptions and uncertainties

August 28, 2009

Published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, this paper provides a brief perspective on “ecological niches” - describing how niche thinking and modeling have been used to project changes in the distributions of species, and assessing several related assumptions and uncertainties. These areas are illustrated using examples from research on California birds. The paper concludes with an assessment the usefulness of niche-based models for projecting climate-change impacts on biodiversity and the resulting implications for conservation and management.

Climate Literacy and Energy Awareness Network (CLEAN) and Portal

The Climate Literacy and Energy Awareness Network (CLEAN) launched in November 2010 as a new National Science Digital Library (NSDL) Pathways project. It builds on the efforts of the Climate Literacy Network and the establishment of the Climate Literacy: Essential Principles of Climate Science, to steward a broad collection of educational resources that facilitate students, teachers, and citizens in becoming climate literate.
