North Carolina Flood Risk Information System

In North Carolina, the state developed a Flood Risk Information System to improve the accuracy and functionality of the state's floodplain maps, and to help local governments and state agencies make decisions about how to reduce flood losses (or mitigate flood risks). The state digitized the floodplain maps developed by Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) using high-resolution LiDAR data for the entire state, and developed this System to make the maps more accurate and easier to use. This System incorporates additional data layers not included on FEMA floodplain maps - such as flood depth damage information determined from building footprints, parcel information, and first floor elevations.

Arizona State University Foresight Initiative

The National Geospatial Intelligence Agency (NGA) has awarded Arizona State University a five-year, $20 million agreement to research the effects of climate change and its propensity to cause civil and political unrest. Effective as of June 1, 2014, the agreement is known as the Foresight Initiative.

EPA National Stormwater Calculator

2014

The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) National Stormwater Calculator (SWC) is a desktop application that estimates the annual amount of rainwater and frequency of runoff from a specific site anywhere in the United States (including Puerto Rico). The SWC is a simple to use tool for computing small site hydrology by estimating the amount of stormwater runoff generated from a site under different development and control scenarios over a long term period of historical rainfall. The analysis takes into account local soil conditions, slope, land cover and meteorology.

Sea Level Rise Phone App

The Sea Level Rise Phone App crowdsources information about climate change related flooding and sea level rise. The app was initially developed to capture flooding information for the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, which currently faces the most severe sea level rise on the East Coast and is at the second highest risk from sea level rise in the United States.  As of early 2017, volunteers were using the app in fourteen U. S. states (plus Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia), as well as internationally in Russia, Kenya, South Africa, the Netherlands.

Florida Sea Level Scenario Sketch Planning Tool for Transportation Planning

September 2013

Developed by researchers at the University of Florida and funded by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), this report details the development of a Sea Level Scenario Sketch Planning Tool for assessing vulnerabilities of transportation facilities to sea level rise. This planning framework builds off of previous FDOT-funded research that was conducted in 2012 by Florida Atlantic University, and is detailed in the report Development of a Methodology for the Assessment of Sea Level Rise Impacts on Florida’s Transportation Modes and Infrastructure.

Sea-Level Rise Tool for Hurricane Sandy Recovery

June 20, 2013

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) developed a tool that can assist communities affected by Hurricane Sandy in reducing vulnerability of transportation and other infrastructure to future sea-level rise and flood risk. The tool, which involves a set of maps showing floodplains under sea-level rise scenarios and an updated USACE Sea-Level Change calculator showing site-specific flood elevation data, helps communities understand the effects of sea-level rise on future flood risk and incorporate this information into planning and decision-making.

MATCH: Metadata Access Tool for Climate and Health

The interagency U. S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP) launched a new online tool designed to accelerate research relating to climate change and human health - the Metadata Access Tool for Climate and Health, or “MATCH. ”  This publicly accessible, online tool for researchers offers centralized access to metadata summary information that puts each dataset into context on thousands of government-held datasets related to health, the environment, and climate-science. MATCH is one of a growing number of tools, driven by open data, that are being made available by the Obama Administration,  in this case, at the important intersection of climate and human health.

Climate Commons is a map-based interactive platform that contains layers of news and information on climate change in the US. It is designed to provide academics, policymakers, journalists, and the general public with the latest data and stories on the causes and impacts of, and responses to climate change across the country. The map combines the most recently available data on climate change indicators, such as temperature, precipitation, and emissions, with the latest, geo-tagged stories on climate change in the United States.
