The Atlas of Mortality and Economic Losses from Weather, Climate and Water Extremes
July 11, 2014
‘The Atlas of Mortality and Economic Losses from Weather, Climate and Water Extremes 1970-2012’ describes the distribution and impacts of weather, climate, and water-related disasters and highlights measures to increase resilience. The report considers the importance of historical, geo-referenced information about deaths and damages to estimate risks before the next disaster occurs. This information is intended to support practical decisions on reducing potential impacts by, for example, improved early warning systems, retrofitting critical infrastructure, or enforcing new building codes.

Severe Weather and Manufacturing in America: Comparing the cost of drought, storms, and extreme temperatures with the cost of new EPA standards
June 2014
This analysis compares the cost of the new EPA mandated reforms on energy standards intended to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from power plants 30% by 2030, with the costs manufacturers ultimately face from the impacts of severe weather. The Business Forward Foundation puts these numbers into perspective by examining automotive manufacturing - the largest industrial sector in the U.S.

National Climate Assessment
May 6, 2014
The U. S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP) has a legal mandate to conduct a National Climate Assessment (NCA) every four years, the third and most recent of which was released in May 2014. Summarizing current and future climate change impacts across the nation, the NCA is the most comprehensive assessment of climate change impacts ever conducted in the U. S. The new report is presented on a highly interactive website, with a stunning visual presentation, intended to fully engage the general public along with decision-makers.

A Geospatial Dataset for U.S. Hurricane Storm Surge and Sea-level Rise Vulnerability: Development and Case Study Applications
April 2014
Published in the ‘Climate Risk Management’ journal, this study presents the results of an effort to develop storm surge inundation layers for the eastern U.S. - a first pass assessment of exposure to hurricane storm surge and sea-level rise for the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic coasts. The results include multiple inundation mapping overlays reflecting both hurricanes of different intensities as well as various scenarios of sea-level rise.

The Economic Case for Restoring Coastal Ecosystems
April 2014
The Center for American Progress (CAP) and Oxfam America collaborated with a research team to identify and analyze 3 coastal restoration sites of the 50 that NOAA funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. A detailed economic analysis of three sites was produced that exemplify the potential economic benefits of coastal restoration. The sites analyzed for the report are an oyster reef and sea grass restoration project in the Seaside Bays of Virginia, an oyster reef project in Mobile Bay, Alabama, and salt marsh restoration in San Francisco Bay, California.

San Diego, 2050 is Calling. How Will We Answer?
July 2014
The San Diego Foundation’s Regional Focus 2050 Study explores what the San Diego region will be like in the year 2050 if current climate change trends continue. The report describes the projected impacts of climate change affecting the San Diego region related to extreme weather events, water supply, wildfires, natural resources and public health, as well as a wide range of adaptive strategies for local leaders to consider. This report is part of an effort by the Climate Education Partners (CEP) to develop and implement a climate change education plan for the San Diego region of California.

Risky Business: The Economic Risks of Climate Change to the United States, Final report
June 24, 2014
‘Risky Business’ estimates the impact of projected changes in temperature, precipitation, sea levels, and storm activity on the U. S. economy. The report presents a new approach to understanding climate risks for key U. S. business sectors, and provides business leaders with a framework for measuring and mitigating their own exposure to climate risk. The Risky Business research focused on damage to coastal property and infrastructure from rising sea levels and increased storm surge, climate-driven changes in agricultural production and energy demand, and the impact of higher temperatures on labor productivity and public health.
