Hampton Roads Sea Level Rise Preparedness and Resilience Intergovernmental Planning Pilot Project

June 2014

The Hampton Roads Sea Level Rise Preparedness and Resilience Intergovernmental Planning Pilot Project is a two-year project to develop adaptive planning for sea level rise by combining the efforts of federal, state and local agencies with private industries and researchers. The Pilot Project was established to take a “whole of government” approach to coordinating the preparedness and resilience planning of the Federal, Commonwealth agencies and Local governments in Hampton Roads. The goal, upon completion of the Pilot Project in 2016, is that Hampton Roads will have in place intergovernmental planning organizational arrangements and procedures that can effectively coordinate sea level rise preparedness and resilience planning.

Metro Boston Regional Climate Change Adaptation Strategy Report

June 30, 2014

The Boston Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC) has developed this adaptation strategy in response to research on the current and projected climate change impacts for the 101 cities and towns of the Metro Boston area of Massachusetts. A Vulnerability Assessment was conducted in developing this strategy and finds that the region is expected to experience an increase in frequency and severity of rain and snow storms, and an increase in heat waves, and sea level rise as a result of climate change.

FTA Transit Asset Management Guide

November 2016

The Federal Transit Administration's guide provides a framework for transit-specific asset management, and includes a section on climate change adaptation. State departments of transportation, metropolitan planning organizations, and transit providers are now required to develop asset management plans to comply with regulations that were finalized by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and FTA in 2016. Although FTA's final rule does not require transit providers to conduct formal climate resiliency analysis in investment prioritization processes, FTA recommends that transit providers have an understanding of and consider risks posed by climate change and extreme weather events.

D.C. Law 21-185: Commission on Climate Change and Resiliency Establishment Act of 2016

November 18, 2016

In November 2016 the District of Columbia Council passed legislation to establish a  new Commission on Climate Change and Resiliency to act in 2017. (Act B21-0369 established the first Commission on Climate Change and Resiliency for DC in 2015). The 2016-2017 Commission is responsible for identifying best practices in resiliency, conducting vulnerability assessments for critical infrastructure and systems, and making recommendations for legislative or regulatory changes needed to reduce vulnerabilities, among other duties.

South Carolina Disaster Relief and Resilience Act

September 29, 2020

In September 2020, the South Carolina legislature passed the Disaster Relief and Resilience Act ("the act," S. B. 259, codified at S. C. Code Ann. §§ 48-62-10, 48-62-310, 6-29-510(D)) to increase the state's resilience to natural disaster and flooding events. The act establishes the position of Chief Resilience Officer and the South Carolina Office of Resilience to coordinate disaster recovery and resilience efforts within the state, creates the Disaster Relief and Resilience Reserve Fund to finance disaster recovery efforts and hazard mitigation projects, and creates the Resilience Revolving Fund to provide low-interest loans to local governments to perform floodplain buyouts and restoration.

Oakland 2030 Equitable Climate Action Plan - Oakland, California

July 2020

In July 2020, the City of Oakland’s Department of Public Works released Oakland 2030: Equitable Climate Action Plan (ECAP). ECAP is a cross-sectional, citywide plan that establishes 40 specific actions that City agencies and its partners must take by 2050 to reduce Oakland’s climate emissions and improve resiliency in an equitable manner. With a strong focus on equity throughout, the ECAP authors have broken down its recommendations and policy actions into seven distinct sectors: transportation and land use, buildings, material consumption and waste, adaptation, carbon removal, City leadership, and the Port of Oakland.

Nevada Executive Order 2019-22 Directing Executive Branch to Advance Nevada's Climate Goals

November 22, 2019

In November 2019, Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak signed Executive Order (EO) 2019-22 directing the executive branch to advance Nevada's climate goals. To accomplish these goals, the governor is requiring state agencies to identify specific policies to reduce in-state greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and to increase Nevada's resilience to climate impacts. The governor, through the EO, recognized the warming climate in Nevada and the need to take action to mitigate and adapt to other past, present, and future impacts of climate change.
