USGS Digital Shoreline Analysis System

Developed by the U.S. Geological Survey, the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) is computer software that calculates shoreline rate-of-change statistics from multiple shoreline positions to analyze historic shoreline change.

eCoastal Tools

Developed by the U. S. Army Corp of Engineers, eCoastal Tools can be used to help make coastal engineering and planning decisions.   A set of applications that enable ArcGIS users to gain access to interfaces for data retrieval and to simplify complex GIS analysis procedures are available. These tools were specifically designed to address the needs of coastal engineers, and include features such as Survey Tools; Profile Loader; and Sediment Budget Analysis System for ArcView.   This tool was used to analyze LIDAR data obtained after Hurricane Katrina, helping to quantify the changes that occurred on Dauphin Island.

Creating Resilient Water Utilities Initiative (CRWU)

The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Creating Resilient Water Utilities (formally Climate Resilient Water Utilities - CRWU) initiative to assist water and wastewater utilities in preparing for climate change. CRWU offers a suite of tools and resources to promote the understanding of climate science, associated risks to the water sector, and pertinent adaptation options for utilities and communities to implement. EPA designed the CRWU resources to translate complex climate projections into usable formats - to assist in building a more resilient water sector.

Tribal Climate Change Project

The Tribal Climate Change Project (TCCP) is a collaborative project between the University of Oregon Environmental Studies Program and the USDA Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station. TCCP aims to understand the needs, lessons learned, and opportunities American Indians and Alaska Natives have in planning for the physical effects of climate change. This information will be used to inform resource management decision-making in the context of climate change. This project supports the USDA Forest Service 2010 Coordinated Approach to Tribal Climate Change Research strategy.

Climate Literacy and Energy Awareness Network (CLEAN) and Portal

The Climate Literacy and Energy Awareness Network (CLEAN) launched in November 2010 as a new National Science Digital Library (NSDL) Pathways project. It builds on the efforts of the Climate Literacy Network and the establishment of the Climate Literacy: Essential Principles of Climate Science, to steward a broad collection of educational resources that facilitate students, teachers, and citizens in becoming climate literate.

Modeling Bird Distribution Responses to Climate Change: A mapping tool to assist land managers and scientists in California

This site allows users to see current and future maps of bird species distributions, vegetation, or climate variables.   Using sophisticated species distribution modeling techniques, this site presents current and potential futures for bird communities in California based on different climate model outputs. Future bird distributions are based on regional climate model projections for the periods 2038-2070 (IPCC Scenario A2) and 2080-2099 (IPCC Scenario A1B). Models were developed for over 80 California Partners in Flight (CalPIF) focal species, of which 60 non-special-status species are represented in this tool.

Hazards - United States (Hazus)

Hazards-United States (Hazus) is a nationally applicable standardized methodology that contains models for estimating potential losses from earthquakes, floods, and hurricanes. Hazus uses Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology to estimate physical, economic, and social impacts of disasters. It graphically illustrates the limits of identified high-risk locations due to earthquake, hurricane, and floods. Users can then visualize the spatial relationships between populations and other more permanently fixed geographic assets or resources for the specific hazard being modeled, a crucial function in the pre-disaster planning process.
