Adapting to Climate Change and Variability Marquette, Michigan

September 2013

This assessment outlines the climate concerns of the city of Marquette, Michigan - which is the largest city in the Upper Peninsula region. Marquette’s economy relies on tourism, timber, mining, health care, education, and high tech manufacturing. The city is already seeing climate impacts in Lake Superior’s warmer waters that has raised bacterial levels high enough to force Marquette to close a public beach. The plan drew on a series of public meetings and small group sessions where participants assessed strategies related to: Transportation, Tourism, Agriculture, Land Use, Forests, Natural Resources, and Public Health.

Preparing for a Changing Climate: Washington State's Integrated Climate Response Strategy

April 2012

This report was prepared by the Washington Department of Ecology, offering recommendations on how existing state policies and programs can better prepare Washington State to respond to the impacts of climate change. This response strategy was built in collaboration with the state departments of Agriculture, Commerce, Fish and Wildlife, Health, Natural Resources, and Transportation - integrating the recommendations of the four advisory groups. It also utilizes the best available science on climate impacts from the Washington Climate Change Impacts Assessment, as well as Washington’s initial adaptation plan developed in 2008 under Executive Order 07-02.

Innovative Approaches for Adapting to Water Variability in the West

May 2012

This brief reviews three approaches that communities are pursuing to adapt to climate change:

  • New Mexico's Active Water Resource Management program, which put rules into place that allow for temporary water use changes in real time in case of drought.
  • The Water Utility Climate Alliance (WUCA), which was founded by water managers concerned by a gap in climate assessment and adaptation science needed to support their decisions.
  • Colorado's Joint Front Range Climate Change Vulnerability Study, which brings together the state and water utilities to assess climate change's impact on local water availability.
