West Wide Wildfire Risk Assessment

2013

The Council of Western State Foresters and the Western Forestry Leadership Coalition (WFLC) developed a wildfire risk assessment of all lands for the 17 western states and select Pacific Islands - known as the West Wide Wildfire Risk Assessment, or WWA.  Three sets of summary statistics were developed using the results of the WWA, including Regional Summary Statistics, State Summary Statistics, and County Risk Reports, as well as maps of wildfire risk demonstrating fire threat and that to key assets - downscaled to the county level.

Alaska Highway Study: Groundwater Flow, Permafrost Degradation, and Transportation Infrastructure Stability

2013

The Alaska University Transportation Center (AUTC) of the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, supported a research project to study the effects of groundwater flow on permafrost degradation and resulting road instability. The stability of permafrost below roadways and embankments is increasingly affected by warming surface temperatures caused by climate change, but may also be affected by heat transfer from groundwater flow. Studies have shown that groundwater flow can accelerate permafrost degradation by several orders of magnitude compared to thaw caused by heat transfer from the atmosphere alone.

Sea Level Rise Vulnerability Study for the City of Los Angeles, California

December 2013

From the University of Southern California (USC) Sea Grant Program, this vulnerability assessment is a summary of initial research on the potential impacts of sea level rise on Los Angeles’s resources and population, coastal and shoreline assets. The report contains the findings of a coastal vulnerabilities study, as well as the results of physical, social and economic vulnerability assessment studies that were commissioned by the City and USC Sea Grant.   In the final section, a suite of adaptation measures for sea level rise is provided, along with several recommendations for moving forward.

Sea Level Rise Vulnerability Study for the City of Los Angeles – Transportation Assets

December 2013

The University of Southern California Sea Grant Program completed a Sea Level Rise Vulnerability Study for the City of Los Angeles that summarizes initial research on the potential impacts of sea-level rise on Los Angeles’s coastal and shoreline assets, including the Port of Los Angeles, the Pacific Coast Highway and other significant coastal roads. The study identifies the Los Angeles (LA) communities and infrastructure most threatened, and offers a suite of adaptation measures including several specific recommendations for safeguarding transportation assets.

Climate Risk Assessment for United Kingdom's "High Speed Two" Rail Network

November 2013

The UK Government's proposed design for a new high speed railway between London and points north considered climate change-related risks, including flooding of tracks and overheating in tunnels. The risk assessment report discusses how those risks will be addressed in the proposed design for the project. The proposed project, High Speed Two (HS2), is designed to link eight of Britain’s ten largest cities and increase the capacity of the country’s rail infrastructure. The project is expected to cost 16 billion British pounds, with service to start in 2026.

State Hazard Mitigation Plans and Climate Change: Rating the States

November 2013

In accordance with federal law, all states must have an approved statewide hazard mitigation plan (SHMP) in order to receive federal disaster mitigation funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The 50-state survey considers to what extent and in what manner climate change related issues are incorporated into existing plans, with all states categorized and ranked. The SHMPs analyzed were all approved by FEMA during the period 2010 to 2012, with the exceptions of Indiana (the latest version available was from 2008), New Hampshire and Vermont (the 2013 draft versions were used).

Climate Ready Boston: Municipal Vulnerability to Climate Change (2013)

Boston, Massachusetts' Mayor Thomas M. Menino administration’s report 'Climate Ready Boston: Municipal Vulnerability to Climate Change' identifies ways in which the City has and will prepare for the impacts of climate change on municipal operations. The report presents the assessments and key findings of Boston's Climate Preparedness Task Force. Short- and long-term vulnerabilities were examined for the City's sectors: Facilities and Capital Planning, Transportation and Water Infrastructure, Neighborhoods, and Public Health and Heat.

Grand Rapids, Michigan Climate Resiliency Report

December 2013

The West Michigan Environmental Action Council, in partnership with the Grand Rapids Office of Energy and Sustainability, investigated climate change resiliency for Grand Rapids, Michigan with city grant funding in 2012.  The outcome of the study was the identification of key impacts across community sectors in Grand Rapids, and recommendations for managing these impacts through adaptation and resiliency planning.  Drawing on interviews from local experts from a wide range of sectors, the report uses the triple bottom line framework to analyze the social, economic, and environmental aspects of climate resiliency.
