Adaptation Pathways 1.0: A Guide for Navigating Sea-Level Rise in the Built Environment

This report summarizes a May 2016 Sea-Level Rise Summit organized by the Florida Center for Environmental Studies at Florida Atlantic University. The goal of the Summit was to produce a first generation roadmap for adaptation, by translating knowledge and ideas into action. The resulting "Adaptation Pathways" - found in Section III of this report - synthesize the Summit’s dominant themes into sea-level rise resilience strategies.

Resilience AmeriCorps
July 2015
Resilience AmeriCorps recruits and trains AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) members to serve low-income communities across the country by developing plans and implementing projects that increase resilience-building capacity. The initiative was originally announced in 2015 in response to recommendations from President Obama’s State, Local, and Tribal Leaders Task Force on Climate Preparedness and Resilience. Current Resilience AmeriCorps projects are addressing a wide range of resilience needs, including climate change, extreme weather, financial instability, and food insecurity through long-term planning, risk communication, community loan programs, and urban food production.

States at Risk: America’s Preparedness Report Card

America’s Preparedness Report Card is a national analysis of state level preparedness for climate change weather-related risks for all 50 states. Climate Central and ICF International identified states with considerable and significantly increasing levels of five major climate threats, including extreme heat, drought, wildfires, inland and coastal flooding, with an emphasis on risks to vulnerable populations. They also assessed climate change preparedness actions that each of the states are taking for their current and future projected impacts.

The Cleveland Tree Plan

In 2015, the City of Cleveland, Ohio published the Cleveland Tree Plan to provide a comprehensive assessment of the city’s current urban forest and an actionable strategy to restore it. In addition to identifying strategies for enhancing and restoring the city's urban tree canopy, the plan identifies 25 indicators for assessing the health of the city's urban forest. The report describes restoration and maintenance of the city's urban tree canopy as a critical component of their efforts to prepare for the impacts of climate change.

Weathering the Next Storm from the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions (C2ES) is a comprehensive overview of the state of climate risk assessment and resilience planning within the business community, and provides business resilience strategies for climate change vulnerabilities. The report identifies various approaches companies are using to address climate risks, examines challenges in managing and reporting those risks, and offers strategies for climate risk management within the private sector.

Northern Manhattan Climate Action Plan, New York City

The Northern Manhattan Climate Action Plan (NMCA) was built by and for the residents of Northern Manhattan of New York City, New York in partnership with WE ACT for Environmental Justice. The plan addresses climate-related impacts on New York City’s most vulnerable populations by promoting environmental policies that also aim to address socioeconomic inequality. South Ironbound Resiliency Action Plan - Newark, New Jersey

The South Ironbound Resiliency Action Plan lays out resiliency goals for a portion of the Ironbound neighborhood in the East Ward of Newark, New Jersey called South Ironbound, that will inform funding priorities and inform longer term climate mitigation and adaptation goals. The neighborhood is prone to flooding due to sewer back-ups, heavy rain storms, and storm surge. The report is organized into strategic components related to resilience. For each strategy, there is an in-depth review of major actions and implementation considerations.

City of Portland and Multnomah County, Oregon Climate Action Plan 2015

The City of Portland and Multnomah County, Oregon 2015 Climate Action Plan (CAP) presents a plan to reduce local carbon emissions 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2050 with specific objectives to achieve by 2030. The Plan also identifies over 100 strategies to both reduce local carbon emissions, and adapt to and prepare for climate change in the short-term. The CAP states that its success is dependent on ability to create jobs, advance social equity, improve public health, strengthen natural systems and enhance quality of life, as co-benefits of these mitigation and adaptation strategies.
