Washington Coastal Resilience Project

2019

The Washington Coastal Resilience Project (WCRP), a partnership between the University of Washington Climate Impacts Group, Washington Sea Grant, the Department of Ecology, the Nature Conservancy, and others, produced resources and tools to increase the capacity of communities in Washington state to prepare for sea-level rise. The materials generated through the project include featured data visualizations, tutorials, and guidelines for planning, all of which are designed to better enable the integration of sea-level rise into local planning and investment decisions.

FEMA National Risk Index

2019

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)’s National Risk Index (NRI) is a mapping tool that can help communities across the U.S. understand their current relative risk and resilience related to natural hazards. The NRI identifies the relative vulnerability of all counties and census tracts within the U.S.to 18 natural hazards.. The relative vulnerability is based on detailed data and estimates of expected annual economic losses, social vulnerability, and community resilience.

Conservation Lands Network Explorer Tool - San Francisco Bay Area, California

The Conservation Lands Network Explorer Tool is an online decision support tool to explore the conservation and biodiversity values of areas within the nine counties that make up California’s San Francisco Bay Area. The Explorer is an interactive map that allows users to visualize various conservation- and climate-related spatial data. The tool was designed to be accessible to all users, no matter GIS skill level. The information provided can help inform land conservation and adaptation strategies.

Building Resilience to Coastal Hazards and Climate Change in Hawaii

April 2019

From May 2016 until April 2019, the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources and the Office of Planning partnered with the University of Hawaii Sea Grant College Program to create three tools that support adaptation at the local level: an interactive data mapthe Hawaii Sea-Level Rise Viewer, and two guidance documentsIntegrating Coastal Hazards and Sea-Level Rise Resilience in Community Planning and Guidance for Disaster Recovery Preparedness in Hawaii. Much of Hawaii’s population and development exist on low-lying coastal plains that are vulnerable to erosion, flooding, and inundation. Building on the state’s 2017 Hawaii Sea Level Rise Vulnerability and Adaptation Report, the complementary tools are aimed at helping communities better prepare for future sea-level rise and other climate change impacts.

Louisiana Land Use Toolkit 3.0

April 2019

The Louisiana Land Use Toolkit was created by the Center of Planning Excellence (CPEX), as a model development code to support economically, culturally, and environmentally sustainable development for communities of Louisiana. The Toolkit applies “Smart Growth” principles to future development planning, aiming to create resilient communities, revitalized neighborhoods, increased land value, affordable housing, and protected rural, natural, and open space areas. The Toolkit is a free, online resource designed for Louisiana parishes and municipalities to tailor to local needs by adopting a zoning code, a subdivision code, or an individual ordinance — or to be customized into a complete development code.

Maryland Environmental Justice Screen Tool (MD EJSCREEN)

January 2019

The Maryland Environmental Justice Screen Tool (MD EJSCREEN) assesses environmental justice risks among census tracts in the state of Maryland. Developed by the Community Engagement, Environmental Justice, and Health Laboratory at the University of Maryland School of Public Health, this tool combines the average pollution burden of a community with the average population demographic characteristics to produce an Environmental Justice (EJ) score. Stakeholders advocacy resulted in the inclusion of six indicators of EJ risk specific to Maryland: asthma, emergency room discharges, percent non-White, proximity to treatment, storage and disposal facilities, myocardial infarction discharges, low birth weight infants, and particulate matter. Through this tool, Maryland residents can be better informed of disparities in EJ risk among different communities and their associated health impacts.

The Adaptation Capability Advancement (Adapt-CA) Toolkit was developed to support local government climate change adaptation initiatives through an agency self-assessment process on institutional capacity. Adapt-CA helps to identify opportunities to build capacity for adaptation integration into local government agency’s operations, leadership, technical capacity and engagement. The tool was designed for California communities, but is relevant and can be useful to local governments throughout country.

Maryland Park Equity Mapper

2019

The Maryland Park Equity Mapper combines layers of demographic and environmental data in order to determine the park equity of different census tracts in Maryland, allowing users to visualize disparities in park access and quality across the state. The tool was developed by the Community Engagement, Environmental Justice, and Health (CEEJH) Laboratory at the University of Maryland School of Public Health in partnership with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (MD DNR) and University of Maryland Center for Geospatial Information Science (CGIS). This tool can be used by residents and policymakers in order to identify underserved communities that are in need of new park infrastructure and green space.

Sea-level Rise: Projections for Maryland 2018

2018

Maryland’s shoreline and coastal bays are highly vulnerable to sea-level rise (SLR), causing shoreline erosion, deterioration of tidal wetlands, saline contamination of low-lying farm fields, "nuisance” tidal flooding, and more.  Fulfilling requirements of Maryland’s Commission on Climate Change Act of 2015, this report provides updated projections of sea-level rise expected into the next century along Maryland’s coast. The probabilistic SLR projections presented in the report offer a scientifically sound and readily applicable basis for planning and regulation, assessments of changes in tidal range and storm surge, development of inundation mapping tools, infrastructure siting and design, and identification of adaptation strategies for high-tide flooding and saltwater intrusion.

Tribal Vulnerability Assessment Resource Toolkit

November 2018

The University of Washington Climate Impacts Group and regional tribal partners developed this suite of resources to support tribes in evaluating their vulnerability to the impacts of climate change. The tools are tailored geographically to each of the 84 tribes in the Pacific Northwest and Great Basin regions of the western U. S. , with the potential to expand to other regions in the country. The new climate resources are available online, and include a climate tool, links to resources and a technical support line for tribal staff and members.
