Duck Hill on the Rise - Green Infrastructure case study in Duck Hill, Mississippi

2017-2018

The Southeast Sustainability Directors Network funded a project in the small town of Duck Hill, Mississippi, (population of approx. 1,300) to implement green infrastructure for repetitive flooding issues in the community. The Southeast Sustainable Communities Fund provided $300,000 to support flood water mitigation and creek restoration, community engagement and empowerment, youth conservationist training, and “creative place making. ” The Fund supports local communities in the southeastern U.

The Nature Conservancy has mapped locations across California with strategic recommendations for land managers to support wildlife and plant resilience to climate change. The interactive online tool is a map of California’s Landscape Vulnerability which presents conservation actions for terrestrial species across the state.

The Northwest Climate Toolbox

The Northwest Climate Toolbox provides free online access to historic, current and future projections of weather and climate data tools, with an emphasis on the Pacific Northwest. Designed to aid decision-makers in agriculture, water resources and fire management, the tools transform raw climatological, meteorological and hydrological information into visualizations for climate adaptation planning. There are currently 17 tools available, most with data for the entire U. S. , some focused specifically on locations in the western and northwestern U.

Advancing Community Adaptation - A Framework for Project Prioritization and Decision Making in coastal Louisiana

2018

Louisiana faces severe climate change impacts of sea level rise and extreme weather events, and related flooding, subsidence, and coastal erosion. The Center for Planning Excellence and Dr. Denise Reed collaborated to develop this adaptation framework for coastal Louisiana, with a particular focus on non-structural elements and the communities impacted in the region.  This framework is a tool for a more holistic approach to planning coastal community resilience, and provides near- and long-term strategies for flood risk mitigation and implementing adaptation measures.

Climate Ready Communities - A Practical Guide to Building Climate Resilience

The Climate Ready Communities guide outlines actions to support the development of a city, town, county or tribe climate adaptation plan. The guidance is built on the Geos Institute’s Whole Community Resilience Framework, and offers community level strategic planning for climate adaptation.  This “Do-It-Yourself” guide incorporates strategies for community engagement, social equity, and cross-sectoral integration - with detailed instructions for vulnerability assessments and plan development.

Rhode Island Shoreline Change Special Area Management Plan (Beach SAMP)

June 2018

In June 2018, the State of Rhode Island’s Coastal Resource Management Council (CRMC) adopted the Rhode Island Shoreline Change Special Area Management Plan (Beach SAMP) to help Rhode Island’s coastal communities better adapt to the impacts of climate and shoreline changes. The Beach SAMP includes various guidance and tools for policymakers and coastal managers. In Chapter 5, CRMC presents the Coastal Hazard Application Guidance” - a five-step risk assessment framework developed for applicants to address the coastal hazards from climate change in permit applications submitted to CRMC for new and substantially improved projects. The purpose of the Coastal Hazard Application Guidance is to ensure that: (1) permit applicants are aware of the coastal risks that could impact their projects; and (2) CRMC can approve projects that are better able to adapt and are more resilient to these risks to increase safety and other benefits for communities, the environment, and the state’s economy. Through a subsequent regulatory amendment, CRMC now requires (since July 2019) that permit applicants submit a Coastal Hazard Application worksheet with their applications to CRMC. Chapter 7 of the Beach SAMP outlines a suite of adaptation measures property owners and decisionmakers can consider, including protection, accommodation, and relocation or managed retreat. The Beach SAMP provides a useful example of innovative shoreline change planning, and serves as a policy model for other state agencies and local governments on how to ensure new development and redevelopment can better adapt and be more resilient to climate change and other coastal hazards.

California SB 606 - Water Management Planning

California Senate Bill 606 - Water Management planning was enacted with contingency on the passage of Assembly Bill 1668, both addressing water conservation and drought resilience across the state. Both respond to Governor Brown’s 2016 Executive Order B-37-16 - “Making Water Conservation a California Way of Life” which directs permanent changes to use water more wisely, eliminate water waste, strengthen local drought resistance, and improve agricultural water use efficiency and drought planning.

The Georgia Climate Research Roadmap

The Georgia Climate Research Roadmap is an interactive platform built around a list of 40 key research questions for policymakers and practitioners to better address climate change in Georgia. The Roadmap’s 40 questions focus on climate change impacts Georgia for major sectors such as water, ecosystems, agriculture, health, and energy - as well as several questions address issues related to social equity and environmental justice. The roadmap is an initiative of the Georgia Climate Project, a state-wide consortium founded by Emory University, the Georgia Institute of Technology, and the University of Georgia to research climate impacts and solutions in Georgia.

Sea Level Rise and Storm Surge Projections for the National Park Service

May 21, 2018

From the University of Colorado in partnership with the National Park Service, this report describes how climate change and associated sea level rise and storm surge can affect coastal U. S. National Park infrastructure, facilities, and resources. This analysis provides sea level rise projections for 118 park units and storm surge projections for 79 of those parks - from which storm surge maps for each site are included. These results are intended to inform adaptation planning for coastal parks and resources managed by the National Park Service.
