Fostering and Communicating Sustainable Lifestyles: Principles and Emerging Practices

December 2016

This report provided by the UN Environment Program outlines operating principles to guide the design, adaptation, and evaluation of “sustainable lifestyle” campaigns and initiatives. The report identifies strategies for developing community level sustainability projects, and provides guidance for effective communication, framing and engagement approaches. It includes 16 unique global case studies that represent various aspects of sustainable living - from compact communities, an agro-ecological marketplace, to a non-profit saving sharks from shark fin soup.

The time to start is now: How implementing natural infrastructure solutions can improve and protect our coasts

2016

This article discusses the value of integrating natural coastal hazard defense solutions - beaches, dunes, reefs and mangroves for example - to manage climate impacts such as sea level rise, flooding, or generally, wave attenuation.  Natural infrastructure engineering guidelines that include performance evaluation are called for in order to begin to integrate these cost-effective methods into resilient coastal community planning.

Changing Shorelines: Adaptation Planning for Maine’s Coastal State Parks

December 1, 2016

Maine’s Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry (DACF) collaborated with the Bureau of Parks and Lands, Maine Geological Survey, and Maine Natural Areas Program to conduct climate change vulnerability assessments for select coastal parks and historic sites on Maine’s shoreline.  Climate adaptation strategies and guidance were developed to help to protect these areas, and are presented in this report along with the assessment findings.  The study sites are considered to have significant natural and historical resources and to be at risk to climate impacts such as more frequent storms, storm surges, flooding, erosion, and sea level rise.

Let’s Keep Moving 2036 - Alaska Statewide Long-Range Transportation Plan

December 2016

From the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities, Let’s Keep Moving 2036 provides the overall policy guidance for regional and area planning of long-range transportation (highways, aviation, transit, rail, marine, bicycle, and pedestrian) in the state of Alaska. The plan includes goals, policies, and actions which inform statewide transportation programs and investments through the year 2036. It is based on technical analyses of four key trends, including climate change, that will have the greatest effect on the transportation system - which represents the government’s largest capital investment in the state.

EPA Climate and Health Assessment Kits

December 2016

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has developed climate communication materials that summarize key points from the USGCRP U.S. Climate and Health Assessment for the different populations that are disproportionately affected by climate-change impacts. The assessment provides a comprehensive analysis of observed and projected health impacts from climate change, and specifies the impacts on a range of vulnerable populations. The eight assessment kits distill this information and focus on the climate impact attributes respective to each population of concern, while offering educational materials and communication strategies.

USGS National Climate Change Viewer

December 9, 2016

The National Climate Change Viewer (NCCV) from USGS allows the user to visualize projected climate change at the national, state, or county level in the continental United States. The viewer provides a number of useful tools for characterizing climate change such as: climographs (plots of monthly averages), histograms that show the distribution or spread of the model simulations, monthly time series spanning 1950-2099, and tables that summarize changes in temperature and precipitation (e. g. , extremes).

Executive Order: Northern Bering Sea Climate Resilience

December 9, 2016

President Obama’s Executive Order establishes the Northern Bering Sea Climate Resilience Area in response to requests from the native coastal tribes in this region for the Federal Government to take action to protect the health of the marine ecosystems, while maintaining sustainable fishing and economic development opportunities. The subsistence practices of these communities, along with inter-related marine ecosystem stability are threatened by warming ocean temperatures, sea ice loss,  sea level rise, increasing maritime traffic, and oil and gas leasing.
