Beyond Diversity: A Roadmap to Building an Inclusive Organization

May 2017

This paper assesses the diversity of staff and boards of directors among large non-profit organizations and foundations working in the environmental sector. The paper argues that diversity is increasingly important within this sector to broaden the base of constituents, increase focus on environmental justice, and bring in a wider range of perspective to successfully identify solutions to environmental challenges. While this paper is not specifically focused on adaptation, it does discuss findings about diversity within organizations that are working in the adaptation space.

Broward County, Florida Ordinance 2017-16 and Future Conditions Maps for Infrastructure Design

May 26, 2017

Pursuant to Broward County Ordinance 2017-16, Broward County, Florida is referring to new groundwater maps that display how sea-level rise and precipitation changes are expected to affect future groundwater levels in reviewing applications for surface water management (i. e. , drainage infrastructure) licenses required for certain development projects. Due to the porous limestone geology throughout much of Southeast Florida, saltwater intrusion and increasing groundwater table levels are an increasingly concerning effect of rising sea levels.

A global economic assessment of city policies to reduce climate change impacts

May 29, 2017

This report provides a quantitative assessment of the economic costs of the joint impacts of local and global climate change for all main cities around the world. The study was conducted by an international team of economists looking at the combined impact of global and local climate change on urban economies, with a focus on urban heat. Published in the journal Nature Climate Change, the analysis of 1,692 cities shows that the total economic costs of climate change for cities this century could be 2.

Guide to Equitable, Community-Driven Climate Preparedness Planning

May 2017

From the Urban Sustainability Directors Network (USDN), this guide is aimed at local government and outlines a framework for designing and implementing a community-driven, equitable climate preparedness planning process. Community-driven planning empowers those experiencing the greatest climate risks to co-define the solutions. Rather than treating equity as a component of climate preparedness planning, this guide suggests that equity should be at the center of any adaptation approach. It outlines why traditional planning falls short of supporting equity, describes why climate change vulnerability is not evenly spread, and identifies how typical adaptation strategies can be reframed to focus on equity. Throughout the document, examples from cities are presented to showcase real-world applications.
