U.S. DOI Pacific Island Climate Science Center: Research Funding - Hawaii, Marshall Islands

December 18, 2014

The U. S. Department of the Interior (DOI) is funding research through the Pacific Islands Climate Science Center (CSC) on the Republic of Marshall Islands (RMI) human migration dynamics in 2016. This project will examine the extent to which direct and indirect links between patterns of human migration and climate events can be identified. The researchers will examine migration trends and motivations, characterize changes that have taken place to local lands and ecosystems in the RMI, and use projections of climate change to understand which islands and communities may be at highest risk in the future.

California Water Action Plan - 2016 Update

January 14, 2016

In response to an extended and extreme period of drought across the state, the California Water Action Plan was first released by the administration of Governor Brown in January 2014 to provide a framework for implementing sustainable water management practices over five years (2014‐2019). The actions described in the plan will support sustainable water management in California by providing a more reliable water supply for farms and communities, restoring important wildlife habitat and species, and helping the state’s water systems and environment become more resilient to climate change.

Case Study: Scottsdale, Arizona’s Cool Roofs Workshop

February 23, 2017

In 2015, the City of Scottsdale, Arizona hosted a Cool Roof workshop series, to promote the use of cool roofs as a strategy for increasing the energy efficiency of buildings and reducing urban heat islands.  Cool roofs are designed to reflect sunlight and heat away from a building, reducing roof temperatures and urban heat islands. Cool roofs also reduce energy use, ambient air temperature, air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and improve human health and comfort.
