Climate Change in Coastal Florida: Economic Impacts of Sea Level Rise

September 2008

Based on a study conducted by Florida State University in 2008, this publication synthesizes the analysis and  findings associated with sea-level rise and associated impacts to six counties along Florida's Gulf and Atlantic coasts. Key findings include more frequent storm surge events, increased storm damages, larger areas at risk for inundation, and more coastal property in harm's way.   The value of land at risk is presented in a summarized chart for three Florida counties (Dade, Duval, and Escambia County) using IPCC’s sea level rise scenarios (in 2005$).

Climate Change in Coastal Areas in Florida: Sea Level Rise Estimation and Economic Analysis to Year 2080

August 2008

In this report the results of downscaled modeling efforts of the effect of sea level rise on six coastal counties in Florida are presented, including: Dade, Dixie, Duval, Escambia, Monroe and Wakulla counties. Additionally, assessments of  the potential economic impacts that this phenomenon could have are presented. Using representative storms, estimates are provided of the damage that could be inflicted from storm surge and flooding, both of which will become more intense and more frequent as a consequence of climate change.

Climate Change, Tropospheric Ozone and Particulate Matter, and Health Impacts

Because the state of the atmosphere determines the development, transport, dispersion, and deposition of air pollutants, there is concern that climate change could affect morbidity and mortality associated with elevated concentrations of these gases and fine particles. This report reviews studies projecting the impacts of climate change on air quality and studies projecting the impacts of these changes on morbidity and mortality. Specific attention is given to cities on the East Coast of the United States, and California.

Climate Change and Infectious Diseases in North America: The Road Ahead

This journal article provides an overview of the expected nature and direction of infectious diseases in North America under a changing climate. Vector-borne, zoonotic (infectious diseases of animal origin that may be transmitted to humans), water and food-borne diseases, and diseases with environmental reservoirs (e. g. , endemic fungal diseases) pose current and future challenges to health care providers and public health agencies. This study addresses climate change related impacts in the San Diego region projected to occur by 2050. It was prepared for inclusion in the 2008 Climate Change Impacts Assessment Second Biennial Science Report to the California Climate Action Team. Focusing on interrelated issues of climate change, sea‐level rise, population growth, land use, water, energy, public health, wildfires, biodiversity, and habitat, the report looks at the potential impacts by 2050, both quantitatively and qualitatively.

Ramifications of Climate Change for Chesapeake Bay Hypoxia

This paper examines how both climate variability and potential climate change can affect hypoxia in the Chesapeake Bay and can present additional challenges to ongoing ecosystem restoration. It is one of four case studies in a report entitled, "Regional Impacts of Climate Change: Four Case Studies in the United States," that examines impacts of particular interest to different regions of the U. Florida and Climate Change: The Costs of Inaction

November 2007

This report was the first detailed analysis of the potential consequences of continued climate change for the state of Florida's economy. The report concludes that, if left unchecked, climate change will significantly harm Florida’s economy in the next several decades, and that impacts on just three sectors - tourism, electric utilities, and real estate - together with effects of hurricanes, would shrink Florida’s Gross State Product by 5% by the end of the century.
