FHWA - Regional Climate Change Effects: Useful Information for Transportation Agencies

May 10, 2010

Developed by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), this report is intended to provide the transportation community (including highway engineers, planners, NEPA practitioners) with transparent, regional information on projected climate changes and effects that are most relevant to the U. S. highway system. This information is designed to inform assessments of the risks and vulnerabilities facing the current U. S. transportation system, and support planning and project development activities.

Impacts of Climate Change in Flood Frequency Analysis for Transportation Design in Alaska

July 2010

This study addresses whether or not current flood frequency estimates for south-central Alaska adequately characterize true flood occurrences given limited observational data, the influence of natural climate variability on extreme events, and potential climate change. The research is intended to lead to the understanding of regional hydrology while resulting in the least total cost for this aspect of transportation infrastructure in Alaska.

A Summary of the Alaskan Marine Arctic Conservation Action Plan

April 2010

The Alaska chapter of The Nature Conservancy (TNC) has developed a Conservation Action Plan (CAP) using TNC's CAP methodology.   The plan covers coastal, nearshore, and marine environments of the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas - including pelagic and benthic habitats, the continental shelf and ocean basins, lagoons and marshes, islands, and the shoreline - within the Exclusive Economic Zone of Alaska. Climate change and its effects are identified as the primary threats to natural resources of ecological and cultural importance in the region.

Estimating Future Costs for Alaska Public Infrastructure at Risk from Climate Change

June 2007

The Institute of Social and Economic Research (ISER) at the University of Alaska Anchorage created a model to estimate how much climate change could add to the costs of maintaining public infrastructure in Alaska in the near future (by 2030). This report describes how that model was developed, and presents preliminary estimates of additional public infrastructure costs resulting from climate change. The report concludes that a changing climate could make it 10 to 20 percent more expensive to build and maintain infrastructure, and that climate change induced damages could add $3.
