Coastal Inundation Toolkit
The Coastal Inundation Toolkit was developed by the Digital Coast Partnership Group to help communities understand and address coastal inundation issues - where water covers what is normally dry land. Information and resources are organized into 5 stages: understanding coastal inundation, identifying community risks and vulnerabilities, creating inundation maps, communicating risks and vulnerability, and discovering what others are doing to address inundation. For each of these 5 areas, explanations and guidance are provided with links to the specific resources available from Digital Coast to support that specific step in the process, making this a user-friendly way to support assessments and planning for sea level rise and extreme weather events.

Climate Change Tree Atlas

The Climate Change Tree Atlas helps determine current and future suitable habitat and distribution of 134 tree species in the Eastern United States based on current climate and projected suitable habitat for the year 2100. The Atlas provides detailed information on environmental characteristics defining these distributions for each species, and can be used to develop large-scale projections of species responses to climate change. EPA New England Healthy Communities Grant Program
The Healthy Communities Grant Program is EPA New England’s main grant program to work directly with communities to reduce environmental risks in order to protect and improve human health and the quality of life, advance resilience, and preserve/restore important ecosystems. EPA acknowledges that all communities are at risk for climate change and extreme weather impacts, and supports planning and preparation for these impacts within Healthy Communities projects.

Maine H.P. 1169–L.D. 1572: Resolve, To Analyze the Impact of Sea-Level Rise
June 16, 2021
On June 16, 2021, Maine Governor Janet Mills signed into law H. P. 1169–L. D. 1572 directing state-level departments and agencies to conduct a review of their laws and regulations to incorporate considerations of a relative sea-level rise of 1. 5 feet by 2050 and 4 feet by 2100. Additionally, this law directs state-level departments and agencies to identify ways to implement strategy F3 of the Maine Climate Action Plan, Maine Won’t Wait, “to enhance community resilience to flooding and other climate impacts.

Maine Act to Help Municipalities Prepare for Sea Level Rise (LD 563)
May 29, 2019
Maine Governor Janet Mills signed into law LD 563, “An Act to Help Municipalities Prepare for Sea Level Rise” in May 2019. The law amends the State’s growth management and local land-use planning requirements (at Title 30-A, Chapter 187 of the Maine Code) to address the effects of sea-level rise. It allows coastal municipalities and “multimunicipal” regions including coastal municipalities to consider sea level rise projections and potential effects on buildings, transportation infrastructure, sewage treatment facilities, and other municipal or private facilities.

An Act to Promote Clean Energy Jobs and to Establish the Maine Climate Council
June 26, 2019
In June 2019, Maine Governor Janet Mills signed into law "An Act to Promote Clean Energy Jobs and to Establish the Maine Climate Council. " The act states that the impacts of climate change have created an "emergency within the meaning of the Constitution of Maine" and find that the law is "immediately necessary for the preservation of the public peace, health and safety. " To address the state's climate emergency, the act includes multiple provisions related to climate adaptation and resilience.

Maine LD 1602 – Establishes a Commission to study the impacts of ocean acidification in Maine
April 30, 2014
On April 30, 2014 Maine addressed the threat of ocean acidification with a new law: 'Resolve, Establishing the Commission to Study the Effects of Coastal and Ocean Acidification and Its Existing and Potential Effects on Species That Are Commercially Harvested and Grown along the Maine Coast. ’ The first of its kind on the East Coast, the law considers the impacts of rising carbon dioxide levels in the ocean on the ecosystem and on commercial shellfish grown and harvested along the Maine coast.

"Resolve, To Continue Evaluating Climate Change Adaptation Options for the State" - Maine SP0733, LD 1818
April 1, 2010
This 2010 resolution extended authorization for the climate-change planning activities of Maine's Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) stakeholder group (previously granted authority under "Resolve, To Evaluate Climate Change Adaptation Options for the State": Maine SPO 163). DEP was directed to continue to evaluate adaptation measures available to the people and businesses of Maine. DEP was required to report its progress on developing the state's adaptation plan to the joint standing committee of the Legislature with jurisdiction over natural resources matters by January 2011, with a final plan to the committee and the governor by the following year.
