Mitigwaki idash Nibi (Our Forests and Water): A Climate Adaptation Plan for the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians

2014

The Red Lake Department of Natural Resources (DNR), with support from the Model Forest Policy Program, developed this climate adaptation plan for the natural resources of the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indian Reservation in northern Minnesota. This plan identifies goals, objectives, strategies, and action steps to address climate impacts to the forest and water systems within the Reservation. The plan will inform future resource management, development, and planning programs with the aim to help the tribe become climate resilient.

Great Lakes Restoration and Climate Change Symposium

April 2014

The purpose of the Great Lakes Restoration and Climate Change event was to convene Great Lakes leaders and climate experts to assess the range of impacts of climate change on the Great Lakes, and to develop policy-based strategies to integrate climate variation into future restoration and stewardship practices. Jenny Kehl, the director of the Center for Water Policy at University of Wisconsin’s School of Freshwater Sciences, spearheaded the meeting and action plan.

Minnesota State Hazard Mitigation Plan

March 14, 2014

Minnesota’s State Hazard Mitigation Plan identifies major natural hazards occurring across the state, and presents a comprehensive assessment of the vulnerability to those hazards. The Plan identifies goals and recommended actions for state government to reduce and/or prevent injury and damage from hazardous events. Beyond compliance to the Federal Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000, Minnesota’s Hazard Mitigation Plan includes a description of the effects of climate change for each of the natural hazards identified.

Building the Blue Economy: Opportunities for Community-Based Organizations in Stormwater Management

April 17, 2014

Using Buffalo, New York as a primary case study, this report explores  both the challenges and winning strategies for advocating for neighborhood-level green infrastructure solutions. It focuses on a project called “PUSH Blue,” supported by the non-profit People United for Sustainable Housing (PUSH) Buffalo, to implement stormwater management intervention in Buffalo’s West Side. Especially for low-income communities, such projects can yield strong intersecting benefits for sustainability, neighborhood redevelopment, and job creation.

Midwest Climate Hub

2014

The USDA Regional Climate Hubs offer climate adaptation tools, strategies management options, and technical support to farmers, ranchers and forest land owners. The Hubs direct land managers to USDA agencies that can provide program support to enable them to implement climate-informed management practices. The Midwest Climate Hub works with the states of Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, and Minnesota.

Rebuilding Minnesota Highway 210 near Jay Cooke State Park

November 2013

The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) implemented several different solutions to address damage to Minnesota Highway 210 near Jay Cooke State Park to improve the future resilience of the highway. Measures include custom culvert design, soil stabilization, and replacing culverts with bridges. Multiple sections of Highway 210 remain closed while MnDOT conducts damage assessments and develops long-term plans.

Great Lakes Green Streets Guidebook

August 2013

This guidebook, published by the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG), provides examples of roadways projects within the Great Lakes Watershed that utilize green infrastructure methods to improve water quality and reduce stormwater runoff. Developed as a complement to the Low Impact Development Manual for Michigan, the guidebook offers support to municipalities interested in planning, designing, and constructing green streets.
