Building the Blue Economy: Opportunities for Community-Based Organizations in Stormwater Management

April 17, 2014

Using Buffalo, New York as a primary case study, this report explores  both the challenges and winning strategies for advocating for neighborhood-level green infrastructure solutions. It focuses on a project called “PUSH Blue,” supported by the non-profit People United for Sustainable Housing (PUSH) Buffalo, to implement stormwater management intervention in Buffalo’s West Side. Especially for low-income communities, such projects can yield strong intersecting benefits for sustainability, neighborhood redevelopment, and job creation.

Great Lakes Adaptation Assessment for Cities (GLAA-C)

2011

Conducted from 2011-2014, the Great Lakes Adaptation Assessment for Cities (GLAA-C) was an Integrated Assessment project supported by the University of Michigan Graham Sustainability Institute, the Kresge Foundation, and in collaboration with Great Lakes Integrated Sciences + Assessments (GLISA). The GLAA-C program was designed to work with cities throughout the Great Lakes region to better understand municipal level climate change impacts. The project also helped develop and implement a variety of adaptation measures throughout the region.

Department of the Interior (DOI): Plains and Prairie Potholes Landscape Conservation Cooperative (LCC)

The Plains & Prairie Potholes Landscape Conservation Cooperative (PPP LCC) is one of 21 LCCs established by Secretarial Order No. 3289, which focus on on-the-ground strategic conservation efforts at the landscape level. LCCs are management-science partnerships that inform integrated resource-management actions addressing climate change and other stressors within and across landscapes.

An Equitable Water Future: Opportunities for the Great Lakes Region

The U.S. Water Alliance has investigated water assets and systems in the Great Lakes region, and the equitable management of these assets. The report describes climate change impacts on water resources, along with other equity issues such as failing infrastructure, affordability, and workforce inclusion. Opportunities for the region to adapt the water sector, and detailed strategies provide a framework for making these water systems more inclusive.

Heat in the Heartland: Climate Change and Economic Risk in the U.S.

January 23, 2015

From the Risky Business Project, “Heat in the Heartland” details how extreme heat from unmitigated climate change could transform the Midwest's communities and economy. This assessment defines the range of potential economic consequences on agriculture and businesses, as well as discusses the related impacts on labor productivity, livestock, energy use, public health, crime, fresh water supply and tourism. The report concludes that the most severe risks can still be avoided through early investments in resilience and immediate action to mitigate global warming.

Midwest Climate Hub

2014

The USDA Regional Climate Hubs offer climate adaptation tools, strategies management options, and technical support to farmers, ranchers and forest land owners. The Hubs direct land managers to USDA agencies that can provide program support to enable them to implement climate-informed management practices. The Midwest Climate Hub works with the states of Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, and Minnesota.

Great Lakes Green Streets Guidebook

August 2013

This guidebook, published by the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG), provides examples of roadways projects within the Great Lakes Watershed that utilize green infrastructure methods to improve water quality and reduce stormwater runoff. Developed as a complement to the Low Impact Development Manual for Michigan, the guidebook offers support to municipalities interested in planning, designing, and constructing green streets.
