Climate Change Preparation Planning on National Landscape Conservation System Lands

The National Landscape Conservation System (NLCS) is a collection of BLM lands which are mandated to protect specific resources, including natural, cultural, geologic, scenic, scientific, and recreational resources, found within their boundaries. Several agencies, including the BLM and the U. S. Fish & Wildlife Service, are mandated by DOI Secretarial Order 3289 to "consider and analyze potential climate change impacts when undertaking long-range planning exercises, setting priorities for scientific research, developing multi-year management plans, and making major decisions about the potential use of resources under the Department's purview.

Great 2006 Heat Wave Over California and Nevada: Signal of an Increasing Trend

The July 2006 western heat wave is studied in the context of the region's climate over the past six decades. The study explores the possible connections between a heat wave trend and global warming and details the increased human health and ecosystems risks of night time extreme heat events. The authors describe the climatic behavior and regional causes of great heat waves over California and Nevada, and use this foundation to investigate whether and to what extent the 2006 event may be considered an aberration or a manifestation of a long term climatic change.

Using the NatureServe Climate Change Vulnerability Index: A Nevada Case Study
August 2009
The State of Nevada is amending its State Wildlife Action Plan (SWAP) to incorporate the potential effects of climate change in more detail. The Nevada Department of Wildlife, The Nature Conservancy, Nevada Natural Heritage Program (a NatureServe network member program), Lahontan Audubon Society, and Great Basin Bird Observatory have formed a partnership to complete the amendment. Nevada's SWAP was approved in 2006, and although it identified climate change as a stressor to key habitats and species of conservation concern in a few specific areas, it did not address the degree of vulnerability each species may face due to a warming climate.

Economic and Environmental Costs of Climate Change: State Case Studies
This site provides PDF files of individual state case studies pertaining to the economic and environmental costs of climate change. The studies were prepared by the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) and the Center for Integrative Environmental Research (CIER) at the University of Maryland. The reports summarize climatic changes affecting 12 states, their potential fiscal impact, and the effect that future changes in climate may have on state economies. The research highlights the importance of planning for the possible effects of climate change on state natural and economic resources and explores options for reducing these effects.

Western Governors' Association Wildlife Corridors Initiative Report
June 2008
In response to policy resolution 07-01, Protecting Wildlife Migration Corridors and Crucial Wildlife Habitat in the West, the Western Governors' Association (WGA) launched a Wildlife Corridors Initiative in 2007, a multi-state and collaborative effort in which six work groups were charged with developing recommendations on various aspects of wildlife corridors and crucial habitat in the West.
