Policy Platform of the Healthy Headwaters Alliance - Federal Policy Opportunities

This Policy Platform outlines actionable strategies for federal agencies that can be implemented immediately to protect and restore the watersheds of the western U. S. The policy recommendations were developed by Carpe Diem West’s Healthy Headwaters Alliance, offering near-term policy solutions for the long-term resilience of forested headwaters for water supply. Forested watershed and source water protection is critical for climate resiliency. Watersheds filter pollutants, control erosion, regulate temperature, attenuate floods, and buffer human activities from drinking water resources.

West Wide Wildfire Risk Assessment

2013

The Council of Western State Foresters and the Western Forestry Leadership Coalition (WFLC) developed a wildfire risk assessment of all lands for the 17 western states and select Pacific Islands - known as the West Wide Wildfire Risk Assessment, or WWA.  Three sets of summary statistics were developed using the results of the WWA, including Regional Summary Statistics, State Summary Statistics, and County Risk Reports, as well as maps of wildfire risk demonstrating fire threat and that to key assets - downscaled to the county level.

Navajo Nation Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment for Priority Wildlife Species

October 30, 2013

Developed for the Navajo Nation Department of Fish and Wildlife (NNDFW), this assessment explores potential climate change impacts in the southwest region of the United States, and the vulnerability of priority wildlife species that were identified by the Navajo for their cultural or ecological value. The NNDFW is the official wildlife management agency of the Navajo Nation, which covers roughly 27,000 square miles across Arizona, Utah and New Mexico.

Literature Synthesis on Climate Change Implications for Water and Environmental Resources

September 2013

This report synthesizes regional studies on the implications of climate change on Bureau of Reclamation operations and activities in 17 Western States. Specifically, the report addresses past and projected effects of climate change on hydrology and water resources. The report outlines implications for the key resource areas the Bureau considers in its planning processes for each of the Bureau's five regions: Pacific Northwest, Mid-Pacific, Lower Colorado, Upper Colorado, and Great Plains.
