EPA: Storm Smart Cities - Integrating Green Infrastructure into Local Hazard Mitigation Plans

The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) offers guidance on how green infrastructure could be incorporated into local hazard mitigation plans in this report. The guide is built around a case study of green infrastructure integration efforts in the City of Huntington, West Virginia and the West Virginia Region 2 Planning and Development Area.  The green infrastructure described addresses stormwater and will improve water quality and address flooding challenges - bringing greater resilience to climate impacts in Huntington.

Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professional Certification Program

2017

The Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professional (CBLP) Certification Program is a voluntary credential for professionals who design, install and maintain sustainable landscapes in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The goal of the certification program is to certify professionals throughout the watershed who can maintain conservation landscapes that help reduce stormwater runoff, in turn benefiting local residents and ecosystems.

Central Appalachians Forest Ecosystem Vulnerability Assessment and Synthesis: A Report from the Central Appalachians Climate Change Response Framework Project

February 2015

Led by the U. S. Forest Service (USFS)’s Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science, this assessment evaluates the climate change vulnerability of forested ecosystems covering 18. 9 million acres in the Central Appalachian Broadleaf Forest-Coniferous Forest-Meadow and Eastern Broadleaf Forest Provinces of Ohio, West Virginia, and Maryland. Designed to be a resource for forest managers, the report summarizes the current state of forests in the region including threats and management trends, projected climate impacts, and the results of a climate vulnerability assessment of local tree species and forest ecosystems.

U.S. DOI Hurricane Sandy Coastal Resiliency Competitive Grant Program

2013

The U.S. Department of the Interior's Hurricane Sandy Coastal Resiliency Competitive Grant Program is supporting projects that reduce communities’ vulnerability to the growing risks from coastal storms, sea level rise, flooding, erosion and associated threats through strengthening natural ecosystems that also benefit fish and wildlife. The program is funded by the 2013 Hurricane Disaster Relief Appropriations Act.

Southeast Regional Assessment Project (SERAP)

The Southeast Regional Assessment Project (SERAP) was developed by the Department of Interior's (DOI) National Climate Change and Wildlife Science Center (NCCWSC). This report defines proposed efforts by SERAP to better integrate and support efforts of the eight DOI NCCWSC Regional Climate Science Centers (RCSCs) and DOI's Landscape Conservation Cooperatives (LCCs), optimize ecosystem management decisions, and satisfy overall DOI conservation objectives.

Climate Change Tree Atlas

October 26, 2010

The Climate Change Tree Atlas helps determine current and future suitable habitat and distribution of 134 tree species in the Eastern United States based on current climate and projected suitable habitat for the year 2100. The Atlas provides detailed information on environmental characteristics defining these distributions for each species, and can be used to develop large-scale projections of species responses to climate change. By taking current distributions of tree habitat in the U. S.

Ramifications of Climate Change for Chesapeake Bay Hypoxia

December 2007

This paper examines how both climate variability and potential climate change can affect hypoxia in the Chesapeake Bay and can present additional challenges to ongoing ecosystem restoration. It is one of four case studies in a report entitled, "Regional Impacts of Climate Change: Four Case Studies in the United States," that examines impacts of particular interest to different regions of the U. S. Past observations are used to elucidate the multiple influences of climate on hypoxia and its consequences to the Bay ecosystems.

The Chesapeake Research Consortium (CRC) is a non-profit corporation chartered by the State of Maryland. It is an association of six institutions, each with long-standing research on problems affecting the Chesapeake Bay and its watershed. The participating institutions are the Johns Hopkins University, University System of Maryland, Smithsonian Institution, Virginia Institute of Marine Science, Old Dominion University, and Pennsylvania State University.
