Great Lakes Green Streets Guidebook

August 2013

This guidebook, published by the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG), provides examples of roadways projects within the Great Lakes Watershed that utilize green infrastructure methods to improve water quality and reduce stormwater runoff. Developed as a complement to the Low Impact Development Manual for Michigan, the guidebook offers support to municipalities interested in planning, designing, and constructing green streets.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin Regional Green Infrastructure Plan

June 2013

Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) has established a 2035 Vision for “zero basement backups, zero overflows, and improved water quality. ” To achieve these goals, MMSD has transformed its approach to managing stormwater by utilizing green infrastructure technologies in its urban watershed management plan. By implementing widespread use of green infrastructure (GI) to complement the region’s grey infrastructure, the Regional Green Infrastructure Plan documents how to meet the 2035 goal by capturing the first 0.

Evaluation of Combined Heat and Power Technologies for Wastewater Treatment Facilities

September 25, 2012

The report was developed by Columbus Water Works, under an assistance agreement awarded by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in support of their Columbus Biosolids Flow-Through Thermophilic Treatment National Demonstration Project. The report examines common combined heat and power (CHP) technologies for converting anaerobic digester gas to electrical power and produce heat.  The document includes technical and cost information to assist users in considering using more efficient, sustainable, and cost-effective wastewater treatment and in-plant wet weather management technologies.

City of Milwaukee, Wisconsin All Hazards Mitigation Plan

June 2012

In 2012, this All Hazard Mitigation Plan was adopted by the City of Milwaukee in compliance with requirements of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Although the plan does not have in-depth treatment of climate change, it does acknowledge that future planning should utilize estimates of how climate change will effect precipitation in the region (at p. 63).

USGS Integrated Watershed Scale Response to Global Change in Selected Basins Across the United States

May 16, 2012

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has utilized water availability models to project local-level climate change impacts in 14 water basins. To determine the sensitivity and potential effect of long-term climate change on the freshwater resources of the U. S. , the USGS Global Change study, “An integrated watershed scale response to global change in selected basins across the United States” was started in 2008 and published its results in 2012. The long-term goal of this study is to provide the foundation for hydrologically based climate change studies across the nation.

NADO Resilient Regions report

The National Association of Development Organizations (NADO) Resilient Regions report describes how regional planning and development organizations are helping local governments to re-build resiliently after natural disasters.  The report offers detailed case studies from Florida, Oklahoma, Mississippi, and Wisconsin. Northwoods Climate Change Response Framework

2011

To address climate change impacts on northern Minnesota, Michigan and Wisconsin forests, the ‘Northwoods Climate Change Response Framework’ was established in 2011. The project has involved more than 40 scientists and natural resource professionals collaborating to assess the vulnerability of forest ecosystems to climate change – developing the Framework for resource management, conservation, and collaboration in adaptation planning.
