Virginia Beach Sea Level Wise Adaptation Strategy

February 2020

The City of Virginia Beach, Virginia Sea Level Wise Adaptation Strategy is designed to help guide the city’s steps to become more resilient and adapt to sea level rise and flooding by gradually implementing actions through a watershed-based approach. Virginia Beach consists of four watersheds, both inland and coastal, that are characterized by unique physical properties and land-use patterns and affected by five distinct types of flooding - high tide, wind tide, storm surge, rainfall/compounding, and groundwater flooding.

Resilient Houston - City of Houston, Texas Resilience Strategy

February 2020

The City of Houston, Texas, in partnership with 100 Resilient Cities (100RC), finalized its citywide resilience strategy in February 2020. The plan identifies 62 actions across 18 goals touching on issues relating to equity, individual and community resilience, the region's bayous, infrastructure, the regional economy, city government, and more. In conjunction with the plan release, Mayor Sylvester Turner signed an executive order aimed at aligning city budgets and programs with the new resilience strategy.

The Kresge Foundation Climate Resilience and Urban Opportunity Initiative: Evaluation Report

December 10, 2019

The Kresge Foundation established the Climate Resilience and Urban Opportunity (CRUO) initiative in 2014 to advance climate resilience by building capacity within low-income urban communities. Kresge believes that climate resilience requires a comprehensive approach which incorporates climate change mitigation, adaptation, and social cohesion. CROU offered $29 million over 5 years to 15 community-based nonprofit organizations (CBOs) across the U. S. to advance equitable climate resilience. This report reviews the impact of the initiative, outcomes and lessons learned from across the funded projects.

MN EO 19-37: Establishing the Climate Change Subcabinet and the Governor's Advisory Council on Climate Change to Promote Coordinated Climate Change Mitigation and Resilience Strategies in the State of Minnesota

December 2, 2019

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz’s Executive Order 19-37 establishes a Climate Change Subcabinet to be comprised of leaders from across 15 state departments and agencies. The Subcabinet will identify state policies and strategies to build climate resilience, and to significantly mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. The order acknowledges the disparities facing vulnerable populations, and commits Minnesota to develop climate adaptation strategies with and for frontline communities.

Virginia Beach Sea Level Rise Policy Response Report

December 2019

In 2019, the City of Virginia Beach, Virginia released its Sea Level Rise Policy Response Report which identifies climate adaptation strategies, objectives, and potential legal and policy actions it could adopt to reduce Virginia Beach’s short- and long-term flood risk. The flood issues in Virginia Beach are multifaceted and the City is considering a range of adaptation responses - from engineering and planning to regulations and market-based tools - with the aim of pursuing a long-term, comprehensive approach.

New Jersey Executive Order 89 Establishing Statewide Climate Change Resilience Strategy

October 29, 2019

On October 29, 2019, New Jersey Governor Philip Murphy signed Executive Order No. 89, establishing new requirements aimed at building statewide and community resilience, including the development of a Statewide Climate Change Resilience Strategy.

Urban Sustainability Directors Network (USDN) Resilience Hubs

October 2019

The Urban Sustainability Directors Network (USDN) Resilience Hubs initiative is supporting the development of “hubs” that are defined as community-serving facilities meant to both support residents and coordinate resource distribution and services before, during or after a natural hazard event. Resilience hubs offer an approach to climate adaptation that shifts power to communities and residents, enhances communities’ capacity to adapt to climate impacts, and focuses on social equity. Building on the USDN Resilience Hubs White Paper, the Resilience Hub website provides the necessary resources to guide practitioners through the planning and implementation of resilience hub projects.

USDN Guide to Developing Resilience Hubs

The Urban Sustainability Directors Network (USDN) is supporting the development of Resilience Hubs, which are described as community-serving facilities that aid and educate residents, and coordinate resource distribution and services before, during or after a natural hazard event. The USDN Resilience Hub guidance document is a living framework designed to assist communities in planning for, implementing and operating a community Resilience Hub - geared towards local governments, community-based organizations, and other practitioners.

Wisconsin Climate and Health Toolkits

2019

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services created the Climate and Health Toolkits to offer guidance on health-related climate change preparedness and response to local governments, health departments, and the public. Nine toolkits focused on Extreme Heat, Flood, Winter Weather, Wildfire, Chemical Release, Harmful Algal Blooms, Drought, Thunderstorms and Tornadoes, and Vectorborne Disease are provided, each accompanied by a one-page fact sheet for general audiences. Each toolkit offers background information, climate trends, and health impacts associated with the topic, as well as preparedness strategies and guidance, best practice tips, communication tools for outreach, and additional resources.
