Are We Ready? Preparing for the Public Health Challenges of Climate Change

2008

In order to better understand the current state of preparedness for the health effects of climate change, the Environmental Defense Fund collaborated with the National Association of City and County Health Officials (NACCHO) and George Mason University to conduct a survey of local health departments from around the country. The survey asked respondents to discuss their perception of climate-related health risks and the status and adequacy of their departments' activities in response to these risks.

Preparing for a Sea Change in Florida: A Strategy to Cope with the Impacts of Global Warming on the State's Coastal and Marine Systems

2008

This report by the Florida Coastal and Ocean Coalition details how climate change could impact the state's coastal areas, and broadly outlines possible adaptation solutions. It is intended to provide guidelines for concrete, science-based action on the critical issues Florida faces in light of climate change and to stimulate informed debate for the preservation of Florida's natural resources.

Preparing Oregon's Fish, Wildlife, and Habitats for Future Climate Change: A Guide for State Adaptation Efforts

2008

Prepared by the Oregon Global Warming Commission's Fish and Wildlife Adaptation Subcommittee, this report outlines actions needed to better prepare natural systems in the state for climate change, with a specific focus on the management of fish and wildlife populations and their habitats. It reviews the state of knowledge about climate change relating to fish and wildlife populations, and it provides policy recommendations and research priorities for building a state fish and wildlife adaptation strategy.

Sea Level Rise in the Coastal Waters of Washington State

January 2008

This scientific analysis provides low, medium, and high estimates of sea-level rise for the Northwest Olympic Peninsula, Central and Southern Coasts, and Puget Sound areas for 2050 and 2100, to support both public and private investment and other decision making. The authors examine four key factors that influence local SLR, including thermal expansion of the ocean, melting land ice, local winds, and local land changes (e. g. from tectonic movement and isostatic rebound), to calculate these projections.

Water Supply and Stress Index Model (WaSSI)

2008

WaSSI is a tool that models historical, current, and future watershed stress for a particular zip code by comparing water supply and demand. Planners can select which of two climate models to use (HadCM2SuL - warm & wet; or CGC1 - hot & dry) to assess possible effects on supply and stress created by climate change under these scenarios. WaSSI uses historical USGS or state water bureau data to estimate past demand; future demand and supply scenarios are based on modeled changes in land use, land management, population, and climate change.

The San Diego Foundation Regional Focus 2050 Study: Climate Change Related Impacts in the San Diego Region by 2050

2008

This study addresses climate change related impacts in the San Diego region projected to occur by 2050. It was prepared for inclusion in the 2008 Climate Change Impacts Assessment Second Biennial Science Report to the California Climate Action Team. Focusing on interrelated issues of climate change, sea‐level rise, population growth, land use, water, energy, public health, wildfires, biodiversity, and habitat, the report looks at the potential impacts by 2050, both quantitatively and qualitatively.

City of Chicago, Illinois Climate Action Plan (CCAP)

2008

The City of Chicago Climate Task Force developed this Climate Action Plan to address both mitigation and adaptation. The brief adaptation section of the plan discusses nine strategies including: heat management, innovative cooling, protect air quality, manage stormwater, implement green urban design, preserve plants and trees, engage the public, engage businesses, and plan for the future.

From Impacts to Adaptation: Canada in a Changing Climate 2007

2008

This assessment discusses current and future risks and opportunities that climate change presents to Canada, with a focus on human and managed systems. It is based on a critical analysis of existing knowledge, including both published scientific and technical literature and expert knowledge. The current state of understanding is presented, and key knowledge gaps are identified. Many of the chapters address issues specific to a particular region. However there are also chapters that address Canada in the international context, and moving forward on adaptation.

Human Health in a Changing Climate: A Canadian Assessment of Vulnerabilities and Adaptive Capacity

2008

"Human Health in a Changing Climate: A Canadian Assessment of Vulnerabilities and Adaptive Capacity," represents the first comprehensive assessment of health vulnerabilities to climate change in Canada. It provides an up-to-date synthesis of knowledge on how the health of Canadians is affected by our climate today, and what may lie ahead under future climate change.
