U.S. Department of Transportation's Gulf Coast Study

January 2015

The U.S. Department of Transportation conducted the Gulf Coast Study to better understand the range of potential climate change impacts on transportation infrastructure and identify possible strategies for adapting infrastructure. It was conducted in two major phases, starting with Phase 1 (completed in 2008), and ending with the completion of Phase 2 in 2015.

Recommendations for assessing the effects of the DOI Hurricane Sandy Mitigation and Resilience Program on ecological system and infrastructure resilience in the Northeast coastal region

June 2015

This report presents metrics for assessing the resilience of natural and artificial coastal features most affected by Hurricane Sandy along the Northeast coast - such as beaches, dunes, wetlands, and grey and green infrastructure. The focal coastal ecological and infrastructure assets identified are Department of the Interior (DOI) funded projects as implemented through the Disaster Relief Appropriations Act. The report establishes a set of ecological performance metrics for detecting changes in resilience resulting from the project actions, and provides recommendations for completing an assessment of how DOI projects have affected the resilience of the Northeastern coast.

Arizona Extreme Weather, Climate and Health Profile Report

March 2015

From the Arizona State University and the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) the Extreme Weather, Climate and Health Profile Report aims to address and plan for the Arizona’s climate-related health impacts. Through the report, the state initiated a climate and health adaptation planning process known as BRACE (Building Resilience Against Climate Effects), a framework developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to provide local health officials with a mechanism for addressing and adapting to climate-related public health effects.

Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment and Adaptation Options Study for Oregon

December 2014

In 2014 the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) completed a study which assessed the vulnerability of the state’s transportation infrastructure to climate change and natural disasters. The Federal Highway Administration sponsored the report as part of a its Climate Change Resilience Pilot Program which assessed climate impacts for a number of states' transportation systems, and developed feasible adaptation strategies. As part of Oregon’s case study, ODOT, whose Adaptation Work Group provided guidance throughout the process, developed new sea level rise maps, collected baseline data, and used a case study to learn from existing coastal hazard mitigation projects - all of which are detailed in the report.

North Carolina Sea Level Rise Assessment Report - 2015 Update

March 31, 2015

This report responds to a charge from the North Carolina Coastal Resources Commission (CRC) specifying that sea level rise (SLR) projections be developed for a 30- year timeframe - and to the N. C. General Assembly Session Law 2012-202 (which prevented the CRC from taking any regulatory action before July 1, 2016).  Sea level is rising along the entire coast of North Carolina, and the variation in the extent of localized sea level rise and causes of variation are described. The report describes sea level rise dynamics, the use of tide gauges, future projections of SLR in North Carolina, and how to make sense of these predictions - in an approachable fashion.

Central Appalachians Forest Ecosystem Vulnerability Assessment and Synthesis: A Report from the Central Appalachians Climate Change Response Framework Project

February 2015

Led by the U. S. Forest Service (USFS)’s Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science, this assessment evaluates the climate change vulnerability of forested ecosystems covering 18. 9 million acres in the Central Appalachian Broadleaf Forest-Coniferous Forest-Meadow and Eastern Broadleaf Forest Provinces of Ohio, West Virginia, and Maryland. Designed to be a resource for forest managers, the report summarizes the current state of forests in the region including threats and management trends, projected climate impacts, and the results of a climate vulnerability assessment of local tree species and forest ecosystems.

North Carolina Climate and Health Profile: Building Resilience Against Climate Effects

2015

North Carolina is one of 16 states who have been funded by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Building Resilience Against Climate Effects (BRACE) grant program since 2010. As part of the BRACE framework, this Climate and Health Profile report describes the leading climate-related risks and their associated public health impacts in the state.

Damariscotta, Maine Adaptation Planning Study: Downtown Waterfront Area

February 2015

The Town of Damariscotta is considered one of the most vulnerable communities on Maine’s coast for future sea level rise and storm surge. In 2014, Damariscotta received a Maine Coastal Resiliency Grant to study the effects of sea level rise and develop adaptation strategy options for protecting the town.  The report reviews both individual measures that building owners may take to floodproof their own buildings, as well as community level adaptations that the town could take to adapt to sea level rise.
