The report, 'A Conversation on America's Climate Choices,' is the final volume of the America’s Climate Choices suite of activities - a series of five studies requested by Congress.  This report gives an overview of the nation’s options for responding to climate change impacts through broad adaptation strategies. The document offers advice on how to weigh the potential risks and benefits associated with different actions that might be taken to respond to climate change, and how to ensure that actions are as effective as possible.

Direct Potable Reuse: A Path Forward

This report identifies the information and research needed to provide a basis for the feasibility of direct potable reuse (DPR), which is the introduction of purified water into a water supply distribution system or the raw water supply immediately upstream of a water treatment plant. Topics discussed include issues regarding public acceptance, engineering, economics, and regulations. Although the background information on DPR and the needed research identified in this report are applicable across the country and throughout the world, the primary focus is on providing information so that the feasibility of DPR can be evaluated in California.

Northwoods Climate Change Response Framework

2011

To address climate change impacts on northern Minnesota, Michigan and Wisconsin forests, the ‘Northwoods Climate Change Response Framework’ was established in 2011. The project has involved more than 40 scientists and natural resource professionals collaborating to assess the vulnerability of forest ecosystems to climate change – developing the Framework for resource management, conservation, and collaboration in adaptation planning.

Winslow Way Street Redesign (Bainbridge Island, WA)

2011

The City of Bainbridge Island redesigned its main downtown street to update aging water infrastructure, improve walkability and multimodal uses, and better manage stormwater using more natural and vegetated solutions. The new design is more walkable and accessible, supports biking, better manages stormwater with green infrastructure practices, and encourages social cohesion through smart design. Over half a mile in length, this innovative redesign protects street trees and incorporates stormwater planters, rain gardens, and other methods to retain stormwater and prevent flooding.

Surfer's Point Managed Shoreline Retreat Project

2011

The City of Ventura, California, has had ongoing erosion at Surfer's Point, a popular surfing spot adjacent to the mouth of the Ventura River. A California State Park bike path along the shoreline and an adjacent County Fairground parking lot have also experienced frequent damage from erosion. Local stakeholders collectively approved a plan to move the parking lot, pedestrian path, and bike path away from the tideline, instead of building a seawall or adding other armoring, which was projected to permanently damage the beach and surf break.

Restoring the Great Lakes' Coastal Future - Technical Guidance for the Design and Implementation of Climate-Smart Restoration Projects

The purpose of this report is to provide an initial suite of tools and methods to assist in the planning and implementation of climate-smart restoration by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and its partners and grantees. The National Wildlife Federation and EcoAdapt have partnered with NOAA’s Great Lakes Habitat Restoration Program to include climate change in the design and implementation of Great Lakes restoration projects. This guide presents a project-based approach to adjusting restoration activities to address the impacts of climate change on the region.

JFK Airport Runway 13R-31L Rehabilitation (John F. Kennedy International Airport, New York City, NY)

December 2010

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (“Port Authority”) renovated runway 13R-31L at JFK Airport with design features that will help mitigate the urban heat island effect and better manage stormwater. The renovation project featured a number of sustainable initiatives and climate change adaptation measures, designed to reduce the environmental impact of the airport over the lifetime of the runway. A life-cycle cost analysis led the Port Authority to utilize concrete pavement in place of asphalt.

Michigan Cost-Benefit Model Evaluation of M222 Slope Stabilization

2011

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) tested a National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) cost-benefit model to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of a roadside slope stabilization project in light of future temperature and precipitation projections. The road, which is located on a portion of route M-222 along the Kalamazoo River in the City of Allegan, has a slope that has already experienced erosion caused by intense precipitation and flooding.  MDOT was in the process of stabilizing the slope using structural measures, rather than vegetative or other “soft” approaches.

Virginia Living Shorelines Initiative

2011

Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC) was directed by SB 964 in 2011 to develop and implement a general permit regulation that authorizes and encourages the use of living shorelines as the preferred alternative for stabilizing tidal shorelines. In 2015 and again in 2017 the VMRC established permitting regulations pursuant to SB 964. The Living Shoreline Group 1 (2015) and 2 (2017) General Permits for Certain Shoreline Treatments are regulations which streamline the permitting process incentivizing property owners to utilize a living shoreline approach to manage shoreline erosion, and promote tidal wetland vegetation to restore or enhance ecosystem services.
