Building Public Support for Floodplain Management: Guidebook

February 2010

This document provides guidance to enable better communication by floodplain managers to community stakeholders in regard to changes in flooding conditions and regulations. This is a particularly challenging field because, as the authors explain, current (as of 2010) economic incentives created by the National Flood Insurance Program make mitigating hazards in flood-prone areas difficult. Consequently, the report explains how floodplain managers can better understand stakeholders' goals, explain flood hazards, provide explanations of new policies, and implement outreach and education programs.

California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) – Green Technologies for Reducing Slope Erosion

January 28, 2010

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) Division of Research and Innovation conducted a Preliminary Investigation (PI) to identify strategies for reducing roadside slope erosion and preventing costly slope failures as climate change alters patterns of precipitation in California. The PI found that in general, California is a leader in erosion control and stormwater management, but recommended follow-up research on the effectiveness of specific plants or “green” products that may enhance or improve the nature-based methods for stabilizing slopes that California has already begun to implement.

Green Technologies for Reducing Slope Erosion, Preliminary Investigation

January 28, 2010

As climate change alters precipitation patterns, departments of transportation will increasingly face the problem of slope failures. The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) conducted this Preliminary Investigation to identify innovative strategies for reducing the risk of roadside slope erosion. They hope to implement the latest vegetative and soil-based solutions for reducing the volume of highway stormwater runoff on slopes and in water conveyance systems.

Tribal Climate Change Adaptation Options: A Review of the Scientific Literature

January 6, 2010

This report offers an overview of information from published scientific literature that identifies physical changes in the climate, and vulnerabilities of tribal resources to climate change. Adaptation approaches and strategies are described in response to these vulnerabilities, across ecosystems and other sectors such as agriculture, public health, and energy systems. While the paper is aimed at tribes in the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 10, the Pacific Northwest, much of the material is generalized for all audiences.
