Sustainable City pLAn - Los Angeles, California

April 8, 2015

City of Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti released the Sustainable City pLAn to provide a roadmap for a Los Angeles that is “environmentally healthy, economically prosperous, and equitable in opportunity for all. ” The pLAn is a guide to sustainability policies and actions for all City departments, now and over the next 20 years. A complimentary pLAn website was developed to share the document itself and the vision behind it, as well as to present information on each of the City’s sustainability goals.

Planning for Flood Recovery and Long-Term Resilience in Vermont: Smart Growth Approaches for Disaster Resilient Communities

July 2014

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) have partnered to provide Vermont with technical assistance in planning for long-term flood resilience. The goal of the collaboration is to incorporate smart growth principles into local policies, development regulations, and hazard mitigation plans. The project is a product of EPA's year-long Smart Growth Implementation Assistance project in Vermont.

Linn County, Iowa Comprehensive Plan - A Smarter Course: Building on the Past and Embracing the Future of Rural Linn County

July 19, 2013

The 2013 Linn County Comprehensive Plan, effective July 19, 2013, broadens the scope of previous comprehensive plans beyond land use planning to include a broad range of goals such as economic development, sustainability, hazard planning, and renewable energy. While climate adaptation is only briefly mentioned, the plan does describe the expected risk from climate change to the county (including increased floods, heat waves, and other severe weather events).   Additionally, the plan encourages the use of green infrastructure to achieve sustainability and hazard mitigation goals.

Resilience AmeriCorps

July 2015

Resilience AmeriCorps recruits and trains AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) members to serve low-income communities across the country by developing plans and implementing projects that increase resilience-building capacity. The initiative was originally announced in 2015 in response to recommendations from President Obama’s State, Local, and Tribal Leaders Task Force on Climate Preparedness and Resilience. Current Resilience AmeriCorps projects are addressing a wide range of resilience needs, including climate change, extreme weather, financial instability, and food insecurity through long-term planning, risk communication, community loan programs, and urban food production.

The Cleveland Tree Plan

October 20, 2015

In 2015, the City of Cleveland, Ohio the Cleveland Tree Plan to provide a comprehensive assessment of the city’s current urban forest and an actionable strategy to restore it.  In addition to identifying strategies for enhancing and restoring the city's urban tree canopy, the plan details the many benefits that trees provide in the urban environment and quantifies these benefits. 25 indicators for assessing the health of the city's urban forest are included also. The report describes restoration and maintenance of the city's urban tree canopy as a critical component of their efforts to prepare for the impacts of climate change.

September 2017

The Water Equity Clearinghouse is an online database of organizations working at the intersection of water and equity, and presents emergent practices in equitable water management.  The clearinghouse highlights the work of utilities, community-based organizations, government agencies, philanthropic organizations, researchers, and others.  Climate mitigation and adaptation is one of the “Issues Addressed” filters that returns a number of organizations involved in climate change planning and resiliency around water resources.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Resilience Strategy

March 2017

The City of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania released its Resilience Strategy in March 2017 to provide a holistic strategy for helping the city to manage challenges from a changing environment, globalization, and urbanization. The Strategy sets goals, objectives, and action organized around a “P4” community-centered framework addressing resilience in terms of People, Place, Planet, and Performance.  The Strategy is intended to be a blueprint to help the city prepare for resilience challenges by helping the city improve coordination among government and non-governmental organizations, improve budgeting and capital coordination citywide, ensure the institutionalization of resilience practices, and increase resident engagement and empowerment. Development of this plan was supported by the Rockefeller Foundation’s 100 Resilient Cities initiative.

Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) Content Guidelines

January 2015

The U. S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) issued revised guidelines in 2015 that outline the federal requirements and guidance for writing a Comprehensive Economic Development Strategies (CEDS).  The CEDS guidelines now require regional economic development agencies to consider how climate change will affect economic development and to include strategies for increasing economic resilience. The guidelines acknowledge that a region’s long-term economic resilience will be defined by its ability to quickly recover from economic shocks and that climate change will increasingly cause economic disruptions.
